External boot release?

The external boot release (i.e. the handle above the number plate) on my GC does not seem to be working - if pressed, it clicks but nothing happens. I can still open and close it using the dash button, key fob and the tailgate button, just not the external boot release. Is this some setting I have accidentally triggered or it is simply that e.g. a microswitch has failed and needs replacing?

Check in the settings on the iDrive as some models you can turn off the external boot release....

Yes, I tried that but couldn't instantly see anything other than an option to alter the height to which the automatic bootlid opens.

*Bump*

Before I take it into BMW for a check, anyone else got any thoughts on this?

It happened to us once (we have the car just 2 weeks) but I'm not sure why.

Is the engine on? Also, I think then you're in the reverse mode it won't let you open the boot.

If it happens when the engine's off and you're in neutral it might be something wrong. I didn't see any setting in iDrive for that.

Only one for setting up the opening height, same as you found.

So, to come back to this, a 4-series owning acquaintance solved it for me - apparently the factory settings are such that the external boot release will not work if the ignition is on. You don't need to have the engine running, but if the electrics are on, then the external boot release on the hatch is automatically deactivated (but not the internal button or the keyfob button) to prevent theft by passers-by apparently.

Seems odd but it's true. The external release works perfectly with the ignition off and refuses to work with it on.
