Unusual noise at tickover

Hello everbody. First post here so please be gentle

I recently bought a 2012 F30 330d, 73,000 miles with full BMW service history.

I have noticed that at tickover there is a quiet but noticeable repetitive noise, a kind of ticking quack noise. It seems to go away with increased engine revs, and is definitely less apparent with the aircon switched on.

I found a video on YouTube of the same sound from the same engine -
- which does not elaborate on the cause of the noise.

If anyone has any idea of what it might be, or a potential fix, or whether this is just a characteristic of the engine (whether it is even a problem!), it would be very much appreciated.

Thank you in advance, Shay.

Sounds like some sort of resonance or out-of-balance with the a/c fans, perhaps the iDrive or radio cooling fans.
Have you tried changing the a/c vent setting to see if it'a associated with the a/c?

I wouldn't worry about it, personally, as it's not engine associated.

Thank you for the reply. It doesn't seem to have any impact on the way the car runs so I think I can live with it!

It can't be associated with the A/C since it goes up when you rev it. A/C fans stays the same speed wether you rev or not.

I recently had some issues with aircon that had resonating noises that did change with engine RPM.... the blower fan won't change with engine speed but the compressor speed does and if the system is low on refrigerant, the evaporator can become noisy introducing odd noises into the HVAC system. Try a re-gas to rule it out, it's pretty inexpensive.
