Hole cut on purpose in exhaust? Y tho?
This is on a 335i with the dual mufflers, this is the pipe that connects the two at the axleback. Previous owner was the original owner, but his buddy sold it back to him before me so he's not technically the "last owner". Anyways, he has no clue why and neither do I. Anybody have an idea as to what this was cut out for? For sound? This isn't anything I would have expected. Any suggestions for getting it fixed? |

Looks like a ghetto way of trying to make it louder, but I don't see how it would as it's already been through the mufflers at that point. Take it to a muffler shop and have them weld a flat metal piece over it.

Must be a dumbass ghetto mod. Yeah any shop that does exhausts should be able to fix it easily, they'll either weld some metal over it or cut out and replace that pipe.

It was a old trick to essentially get a "golf tee mod" - before it was even known. Back then people didn't know about golf tee mod and this was how they would get louder sound.
When valve is closed exhaust passes through that pipe to another muffler. If you have that hole - then exhaust would come out from that hole (when valve is closed that is) and never get to another muffler bank to get muffled and it will result in louder sound coming from that hole. Of course when valve is open (under WOT for example) then exhaust is coming out of tailpipe anyway and that hole does nothing When golf tee mod was discovered - this hole cut method became obsolete Hope that helps Last edited by Captain comic; 08-18-2017 at 01:12 AM.. |
