Coolant light

Is it normal for a car to need coolant every five or six months ?

No, sounds like you've got a tiny leak. Check around the expansion tank, it's a common failure point on these cars.

Check the cap on the expansion tank. It is known to crack

Check for top leaks, bottom leaks, hoses, water pump, radiator, turbo coolant lines, reservoir, and coolant cap. The cap could be evaporating. Also check the ofhg.

I had a small leak near my top radiator outlet where the upper radiator hose goes to. The plastic on that I guess gets brittle over time and can spring a small leak. I replaced the radiator and voilą problem solved.

Have the system pressure tested if you can't find a leak. Or try running the cold water pump bleed procedure first, it's safer than having the engine running.

Have the same issues...coolant light would come on every month or so. Had it pressure tested this morning and both sides of the radiator are leaking. Quoted $703 from my local indy shop. Called BMW and there's no extended warranty or recall...dammit.
