Who is considering the new E63 S?
This is an strange post for me.... I may actually be considering buying a Mercedes. Has hell frozen over? I am loyal BMW owner until the end. Wait, what?
I bought my first BMW at the age of 26. I am now 37. Over those 11 years, here are the BMW's that have been in my garage: 2006 E46 M3 2008 E60 M5 2010 E60 M5 2011 F02 750Li 2013 F10 M5 2014 F12 M6 GC 2014 F15 X5 2015 F01 750i I have been looking forward to the new M5 for years now. All I can say is that I am somewhat disappointed. It just doesn't seem special anymore. Same engine as before. Likely the same subdued exhaust note. It's just not exciting. Fast? yes. In the meantime Mercedes has really stepped up their game. Their interiors are simply amazing. They sound incredible. They are lightning fast. I hate to say it, but I think BMW M has lost their way. I could be going to the dark side..... Anyone else? |

I'm in a similar position and agree with your views on AMGs ... The E63s is a masterpiece but I wish it was looking a bit more aggressive. If it was not for the wider front arches, the 63s would look exactly like any E class with AMG pack ... considering the cost it would be nice to have the car standing out more from the E line-up. The M5 on the other hand will not be mistaken with the M550i ( no offence to 550i owner) which is a good thing to me. As for the sound AMG have the edge and always had but there is hope with the new M5.... before jumping to the dark side, I'd suggest you wait for the reveal in September as you might be pleasantly surprised

The E63 is a great car, but I will drive the new F90 M5 before I make the choice. There is so much dissent on this board and no one has even seen the car yet.

I think the dissent comes from the "on paper" aspect to the new M5. Usually the "on paper" aspect brings some real excitement. There's just not any of that with the new M5 (especially considering its the same damn engine as the F10 PLUS no DCT!)

E63S
I had an F10 M5 and currently own a 2014 E63s and I always wished I could combine the best attributes of both cars and blend them into one super sedan. Well, it looks like the new E63s and the new M5 are going to do just that. So I think it's going to be an extremely difficult decision between the two. The new tech in the E63 is light years ahead of the old one and that was one thing that it was lacking compared to the M5.
I will say that one thing the E63 has over the M5 is size. It's just a tad smaller which is nice. The 5 series seems so bloated. Also, I like how MB doesn't normally do a huge refresh or comp pack a year after the debut of the model. They'll do a mid-cycle refresh but it's usually just that, mid-cycle. Not one year after the release of the car at least here in the states like they did with the 2013 and 2014 models. But I can't wait until we at least get some more details on the M5. The E63's are apparently all delayed at port so maybe that's a good thing they are so we can see some M5 details before making a decision. Really can't go wrong with either. |

I refer you to der Fuhrer.
http://www.captiongenerator.com/5128...acts-to-F90-M5 Also, as I have posted before, there will be very few fundamental differences mechanically between the E63S and the F90 M5. Design and aesthetic wise it will simply be the same as choosing between red wine or white wine with dinner. Before it used to be Mercedes E63 was the Himbeergeist and the BMW M5 was the Hofbrau Dunkel. Two completely different spirits. Last week I was perusing my local BMW candy store and they had 3 M760i's, and a few M550i's. I took a close look at the M550i's and one of my immediate impressions of it was the size, it was a big car for sure, especially standing at the rear. BMW really did a great job with the interior design and aesthetics of the M550i, it definitely felt special inside, which makes me think that the M5 will be even better. However, I step inside an E63S and I feel surrounded by luxury. The speaker grills of the new Bowers and Wilkins in the M550i did seem a bit too large to me as well. I loved the M760i's more though. What a car that thing is. I'll wait 4 years when they are like $60k however. Lol! But based on the fact that F90 will feature the same engine as the F10 M5, my vote goes to the Mercedes E63S by a margin of 69% for the E63S and 31% for the M5. Besides the new E63S looks pretty damn sexy.

Its weird how much it looks like the F10 M5 from that particular angle. At least the sides / door handles area.

I think Mercedes is better. However I am too poor to get an M5. Considering a regular 2L 4 cyl right now. I love the E class interior dual screen. However, only bmw offering plugin hybrid 530e. And for a 2L, power and handling is clearly not the priority. I am looking for a comfort tech-packed cruiser with good mpg this time. Although E300 is nice, hybrid is just too attractive to turn down. No power figure to brad, better have some futuristic EV tech right. Haha

I'm not excited about the new model as much as i thought i would be and had anticipated to. The E63s is looking way more appealing which i would have preffered those feelings to be toward the F90, Since they are both not out yet i will wait to test drive both before i pull the trigger on one. I love sport saloons and will get into one soon, just which one is the question.

Seen a few in Europe, but none in the US as of yet. Shipments are delayed.

My local store is expecting to see the first E63's in a month or two. I will wait to see and drive both before I decide which I like best.

I saw the E63S at the LA auto show last year and saw one on the road a few weeks ago. It really is an impressive looking car in person (front end much better than rear though). It also sounds better. Personally I don't love the dash on the new S and E class.... one big flat screen doesn't do much for me but the rest of the interior is great. I still think I'd take the M5 over it but this has never even been close for me and now it is.

Totally agree with you on this. I have driven several new E Class cars in Europe as rentals. How much design effort does it take to place t screens up there? None. I appreciate the details of design so it just doesn't do it for me. For 99% of the public though, the screens will win for the WOW factor.

As a new member to this site I am astonished, just on this thread, how many seem to belong to a Mercedes forum instead of a BMW forum. Soon to be a new owner of a dream car for me (2018 540i), I expect to be satisfied for the rest of my life. I guess that is how one feels when they are 56 years old, but I do remember my younger days when impression was everything. This new vehicle is for me and my enjoyment and I won't regret it one bit...thinking I could have had something else a little bit better.
