Need some wheel expertise, please!
I had BMW of Shrewbury installed a set of OEM E46 M3 wheels on and when I hit 60+ the car starts to vibrate a little and gets worse as I hit 100+. It's not the vibrations like when I need rings for non OEM wheels. 18X8 offset 47 225/45/R18 and 18X9 offset 26 255/40/R18 continental tires. Is it because the tires are a bit too big?

First of all, why did you want M3 wheels on E90 anyway? The offsets on M3 wheels are different and you have to use spacers. For yours now, use 15-mm spacers for the front to see if it improves.

Sounds like the wheels/tires need rebalancing. Danny

Your dealer should have known this... Although, mine made the same mistake, so I'm not surprised. My dealer also didn't mount and balance the tires correctly. I had to take the car to Discount Tire and have them ride match the tires. I then sent the bill to BMW and got reimbursed. On those rims you should be running 225/40/R18 on the front, and 255/35/R18 on the back. Also, you need a 10mm spacer for the front rims, as they are too close to the struts - double check that your offset is really 47mm. If it is, you may not experience rubbing, but it will look/handle better with the spacer. If the dealer sold you the rims/tires knowing they would go on an E90, and assuming you didn't know better, you should be able to get your money back. It's BS that they would put the wrong setup on your new car. Good luck... |

I bought these locally. So can't return to BMW. I researched online and on e90post before I went ahead and got the rims. Lots of ppl said that the e46 m3 wheels fit perfectly and there's no rubbing. I had almost 300lbs on the car and so far there's no rubbing. I just found out about the speedometer offset and I know that the tires are off, but the guy who sold me the wheels gave me the continentals for free so I don't really want to spend more $$ just to fix a miner speed error. Although at 60-70 there's very very little vibrations, less than the vibrations I felt when I put on aftermarket wheels without rings (started at 40mph) four months ago. Since I don't have time today to get them balance again, I will do it tomorrow. Thanks for some of the advice guys. Keep me posted of some of the possibilities as to why this is happening. This is my second try with wheel mod and it's really not working for me. I see so many of you guys with nice wheels and it's really making asking the questions as to why I'm the only one experiencing this.

Of course, it won't rub because the diameter of your wheel is ~ 1 inch larger compared to the stock one. Some members have used wheels which had ~1.5 in larger than the stock without rubbing. This may make the car look a little better because you're filling the wheel gap instead of lowering your car if you don't have sport package.

Stupid reps not letting me balance the wheels today because they only have 45 minutes left. But he said that it could be that it takes some time for my tires to break in. I'm not sure if he's right or not, but I notice that on the drive back home I went 80+ and there's almost barely any vibrations. It seems that every I take my car on a freeway or highway that lets me go 80+ the vibrations is getting less and less. I already set up an appointment to rebalance the wheels again, but I will try to drive the car more this weekend to see if the tires break in more. I really hope he's right because I don't want the hassle of going back to the dealer.

I don't know, man. Mine was so quiet the first time I got it out of Wheel Works, no vibration whatsoever. The guy at Wheel Works told me that there shouldn't be any break-in for new tires, and I'd rather trust him, an wheel expert than the service rep. at the BMW dealer.

Pretenter - Actually it's the other way around. If his odometer is already 3 mph off, then it will be 2 to 3 mph further off now.
Example... According to your example, if he was going 60, odo would show say 63. Now it will show 66. Not good, that means he's adding 10% more miles on his car for nothing |
