The double clue.

"The double clue" is one of Agatha Christies most famous short stories. From the two clues left at the crimescen, Poirot deduces who is the thief.

BMW depends heavily on G01 being a success, hence they are investing in unusual intro behaviour:

1
-starting with top of the line M40i, which is contrary to normal procedure, which is to start with simple, low complex vehicles, to let manufacturing have an easy start up.
-reason: to avoid "non BMW freaks" to perceive G01 as a "minor facelift only".

As can be seen from pics - M40i is a very nice looking vehicle, while a low spec car is, probably, less easy to distinguish from current X3.

2 There are rumours, that - even at start up - there will be "special offers".

Again that is not BMW standard procedure. Reason is, probably, to create a backlog, indicating to the public, that G01 is a very desirable vehicle.

Even if this - short term- creates some problems and costs some money, the idea is it will increase status and sales and - long term - earn money.

Thank for pointing it out. At launch I was surprised how challenging it was to find photos of a G20 that's not the M40i which will not be the top selling model for obvious reasons. Even now, photos of the SE and Luxury trims are small images hidden away in PDF brochures - not to be found on the website. Even the M140i and M550i look much more striking than their entry level counter parts.

However, I don't think BMW will create an artificial backlog as the SUV market is very crowded and much more competitive than when the F25 launched. The GLC, new XC60, Q5, Velar, F-Pace, E-Pace and even the X1 are available and BMW's intention is probably to sell as many G01 as they can produce.

Thanks.

I am not talking about an artificial backlog. As you point out - there is fierce competition. Velar is "sold out". Worst what can happen to a new vehicle is that it is perceived as a "facelift only". Also that demand first year is less than manufacturing capacity.

By starting with M40i, it both gives income with high-profit vehicles, and also creates a built up demand - backlog - for "STD" vehicles. The trick is to know for how long.

The drawback is - of course - that one or two will not wait for "his" model.

This is not new - BMW nor I invented it

As I said: rumours are that even at beginning of sales, there could be rebates, which is not common at the beginning of a new vehicle.

In Europe, probably overpaying for trade in:s - in e.g. the US, probably "good" lease deals.

Since dealers supposedly will get DEMO:s in oct, at least in US, deals should surface then - if any.

Only one variant - M40i - could mean that the UK/AU, will not have to wait as long as usual _ if UK will take petrol.

Again: BMW wants to set the stage with M40i.
