Hi. I have an 07 335i that i bought less than a month ago. A few days later i bought it i started to smell and get a wiff of burning oil from the cabin but only when i turn off the car and i get off. The smell isnt really there when im driving only when i park the car and get out. But this morning i went to the store i see some smoke coming from under the hood. So i open it and i see some smoke coming out of the left side of the engine and some to the right. Any idea of what it could be? Its not a lot of smoke but its still noticeable and the smell is very persistent btw its an N54

My guess would be valve cover gasket or cracked valve cover. look for oil on the heat shield just above your turbos.

You've got a lot to learn in a little bit of time...hope you have a couple grand set aside to get the car up to spec.

people need to learn how to research cars before they buy them. It's way too large of an investment not to. Valve cover gasket is easy if you can wrench. If you're asking if that's a hard fix, you're in for a treat.

First time and reasonably handy? I would say 6 hours. some might flame but ive watched this happen personally.

I can do them in about 15 minutes on my own car, but I have no cowl, airbox, or anything else in the way that most n54's have.

Can you do it yourself? I would say yes if you can change your own plugs, tires, oil. make sure you have a torque wrench that can reach low. like 8 inch pound low. make sure you use the correct torque pattern, and i like to used a dab of gasket sealer to seat the new gasket in place in the valve cover. they can wobble out during install.

last thing. Mine once had a leak so bad it literally took a couple hundred miles to burn off the oil smell. I thought it didnt seat. So cleaning would save you some worry.

It had 107k before i bought it and the previous owner did an oil change too ( if that even matters?). Now she has 108k

Be prepared to do a bit of maintenance unless previous owners have been keeping up on it. 100k + is when a bunch of stuff is starting to need replaced

Hey I'm having this same issue. My car said it was low on coolant/ I saw white smoke coming from the left side and could see oil leaking down from somewhere onto the cat/o2 sensor. I took off the wheel to snap some pics yesterday.

Seems like the valve cover gasket. I dont see why anyone wouldnt be able to do it. All you really need to do I know how to turn a wrench and follow directions.

Yup, it's not a difficult task but there are a lot of steps if you're not used to wrenching. Just take your time and lay the parts you disassemble out so it's easy to remember how things go back together (and take pictures for your own reference).

I didn't and bought a 525 instead of a 535, now I have a n54 on a stand to put in! Live and learn.....

Don't listen to any of these guys, the only thing you need to worry about is making sure all of the gaskets are not leaking, as well as the injectors, and turbos. The hpfp, water pump,and thermostat will eventually go,a trans flush n filter will need attention and the coils if you decide to mod. On top of any mods that you may want to do, there may also be worn suspension parts at 100k just were the last owner left it. You may want to make sure You have the updated injectors, turbos and hpfp, pull your plugs when cold and check for fuel, and keep up on your black stone reports so you don't spin your conn. bearings.

What he said...if you can do the labor yourself, it's only ~$5k worth of parts; NBD.

Similar symptoms here, but smoke only from passenger side of the engine. There was only oil on the heat shield. The valve cover gasket was leaking oil into the exhaust manifolds. At those miles, I'd recommend replacing the entire valve cover. They are known to crack and for the PCV ports getting clogged up.

I would love to see someone change their VCG in 15 minutes lmao.

I can vouch for around 6-8 hours for a newbie though. I am not at all experienced at working on cars and that is what it took me. ECS tuning has a very good PDF guide detailing all of the steps.
