Codes P2201 & P229F

I got my codes read sometime back and its giving me NOx sensor but I just looked it up and the 328d has 2 NOx sensors (front and rear). Does anyone know what these code(s) are for which sensor.

P2201
Oxide of nitrogen sensor performance
bank 1

P229F
NOx sensor circuit range
Bank 1 sensor 2

Thats what I wrote down from getting the codes read. Id like to see if anyone knows before i blindly order 500+ parts lol. Or is there any tricks or ways to clean the sensors or see if its something else? Id appreciate all the help. Thanks

What model year, miles? Presumably you're out of warranty...

Bad news: no-one has been particularly successful replacing just one NOx sensor. Also, there is no way to clean them. They have been lasting over 100K miles, so I would be suspicious of them failing earlier than, say 80K miles. There were some early problems with the quality of NOx sensors on early 328d cars however.

You should carefully examine the entire DEF/SCR emissions system. It is unusual for the NOx sensors to fail in isolation. Usually other codes (4d16 and other "DEF insufficiency" to occur first: the diagnostic tests are quite complex and look at other pieces of it before deciding it's the NOx sensors. I would take it to the dealer and have them diagnose it (one hour labor) before replacing the NOx sensors willy nilly.

Thanks for the info, I'm currently sitting at 70k miles on my 2014. So if these sensors have been a running issue is there a recall for them? Also what exact test am i asking for, i dread the pricing for a simple test on this thing when it should be needed this early. Never the less, i take its best to wait on replacing and get it tested first right? Would u recommend i add fresh DEF fluid to my tank? Is there a way to drain the old DEF and add complete new? The DEF I have has been stored for over 6 months would this be a problem?

Don't believe that there was a recall; all I heard about were handled under warranty at low miles (< 20K.)

Unfortunately, the diagnosis process for these things is not a singular thing. Look at http://www.e90post.com/forums/showpo...5&postcount=11 , and the entire thread. While a different root code caused the SES, the system and test for SCR problems should be essentially the same. I know how you feel about "diagnosis" time, but the dealers are really the only people with expertise to figure out what's wrong.

Now, they may just tell you that the NOx sensors need replacing, but spending another couple hundred may well be worth it if they don't and something else is really the problem.

Your other option is to clear the codes and keep running until you get the (very dreaded) "No Start In 200 miles" message. I haven't seen a DIY for draining a 328d tank - it's probably similar to an E70 X5d, I think there's one for that car. Worth a try. People argue about DEF going bad, but a couple people that know have said it's not a problem.

I'd say as long as the bottle you stored was unopened you shouldn't have any problems. I've heard of issues with long-term storage of opened bottles of DEF, basically they say to buy only what you're going to use and use it all.

Could be the problem then, I refilled my DEF container at a truck stop and used what was left it in it. Its been stored inside my house but opened. Would this trigger that?

I don't know about triggering those codes, I don't really know what those codes mean technically. However, I have heard that you shouldn't store opened bottles of DEF. How long was it stored?

I want to say close to a year, which i tracking its about its expiring time after a year. Car still runs perfect just the light is on and the codes. I might just run it till next oil change and DEF fill up. Or should i wait till the DEF completely drains and i get the warning?

Any update on this? Just bought a used 2014 328x and the check engine came on before I completed my 4 hour drive home...

Pulled the code, P229F.

I have a warranty from the shop I purchased from, so truly, it is their problem, but it's only 3000 miles, so I want to ensure that I get it fully resolved.

2014 with 52k.

Thanks

I identified which Sensor it was and replaced it. No more codes. Take it to the shop and have them replace it since it's under their warranty.

P229F

New to OBD codes and working on my own Bimmer, but am airplane mechanic so I do know which is the pointy end of a screw driver.

I have a 2015 328d with ~60k miles. Got a CEL and bought a VEEPEAK OBDCheck BLE. Now I'm trying to figure out what codes mean. I'm getting P229F Bank 1 Sensor 4. Can someone assist me here? I have the car on the lift and opened so as to see the CAT and nearby sensors, but so far do not know what is what or which is bad.

Thanks guys!

Go to the dealer, it's covered under extended warranty!

I will check into that! Thanks! I've had good experiences with my dealer so far, but since neither of my cars are under warranty I figured I'd start doing some things myself.

Car is at dealer getting sensors replaced under 8 year/80K waranty on certain pollution/exhaust components! Thanks!

It also has a recall coming in May on the transfer case, but I don't think they can do that until the recall actually comes out. Might take another trip.

Got it up to 75 mph (or a little more) for a while and wrung it out some. Then I redid the OBDII codes and this time popped up the P2201, a P207F and a P20EE. But this time they all reset and the CEL light stayed out! I'm wondering if lugging the car for a lot of 25 mile trips at 60 mph just chokes it up a bit. I haven't had the EGR checked for the recall and since I'm still getting to know this car, I figure I would check here and see if anyone else has had similar experiences?

Victory was short-lived. Codes returned today (P207F and P207EE) and so far won’t clear. I’m trying to navigate this site on my iPad (dumb idea) and can’t find other posts related to this issue. I don’t live near emissions testing. I would have the EGR and whole system coded out if I knew who to get to do it, or figure out how to do it myself. I can’t believe how mediocre the EGR system is and am beginning to think I made a huge mistake buying this car. Any rays of sunshine (hope) out there?

This has nothing to do with the EGR. What leads you to think it's mediocre?

P codes are very poor at describing any of these situations, there are sometimes 4-6 specific manufacturer codes assigned to one of these not specific P codes.
If you can read actual BMW codes it would help greatly.

That being said, this is most likely a NOx sensor slowly dying. They're covered to 120k/10 year, so go take it to the dealer already.

Did you fill def fluid with really cheap stuff recently?

Totally agree with your assessment of P codes. The code reader/software I use are inadequate to do much diagnosis. I will get it to the dealer as soon as I can - particularly since theres still the open recall issue on the EGR. Its a 250+ mile trip one way to get there so Ive been waiting for an opportunity - with the CEL and codes, sounds like that will happen sooner than later.

I did refill def fluid a few months ago, when it was called for. I bought it at Walmart, not a back alley guy working out of a van. Since Im not the original owner of the vehicle, Im hoping that the extended warranty for the NOX sensors and any other part of the emissions system will still apply.

I used the Car Scanner app with Veepeak adapter and got the P2201 error code on my 2016 F31. I took it to the dealer today and they replaced both NOx sensors under warranty. My car has 50k miles.

The extension is not per owner, it's per car, so you should be good
