Steering wheel controls not working after dead battery

Hey guys,

I tried searching but can't find a good answer to this and my tech can't seem to figure it out without taking things apart.

My 335 blew the radiator in the fall, I had just bought a house and I have my M3 to drive so I didn't rush to get it fixed. Finally got it out of the garage and to my buddy's shop to replace the radiator, oil change, brakes, etc. The battery had died during the course of it's time sitting and started up fine with a jump start.

After we were done doing all the work on the car, my tech went to clear out the codes and reset everything and make sure I was good to go, and remembered he needed to turn off my JB4 before he could plug in his scanner, we couldn't get the JB4 controls to work which is when we realized none of the steering wheel controls were working. The horn still works fine, but the volume and track change buttons and phone buttons don't light up and don't work.

Any idea why this would be? they were working just fine right before the radiator went, any idea why a dead battery would cause the steering wheel controls to stop functioning? Any advice would be a huge help, thanks guys!

Good call, I'll start there. Right though? It is so bizarre to just stop working after the battery died.

Try the coding sub forum for a set of diags.
Get a copy of ista d/p and the Inpa
suite and run diags.
Bimmergeeks cable and setup is a bargain.

Make sure you have a full charge on the battery
not just a jump. Low battery can cause a ghost in the machine.

It's usually a bad clockspring.

In south Africa? Not a clue mate. In the U.S. we have lots of retailers for parts. For some reason on the Facebook E90 pages I often see part outs in South Africa, these must be semi popular cars there?

In my naive view of S Africa I assume everyone would drive Toyota Landcruisers or Prado's

My car also only stopped working after battery went dead and I had to jumpstart. Do you still think its the clockspring?

What Warning Lights appear on Instrument Cluster after Engine Start?
Have you read Fault Codes in ALL Modules, particularly DSC?
There is often an issue with the SAS (Steering Angle Sensor) signal as received by the DSC Module after Battery Disconnected, or VERY LOW Battery Voltage.
If you have NO Diagnostic Software/ Scan Tool, try turning Steering Wheel "Lock-to-Lock" several times with engine running.

If you need specific diagnostic help, please provide Last-7 Characters of your VIN.

When I turn wheel to the left, controls start to work, but not to the right.
