Calling a few e90xi users

So, big day. Kw v1 coils= check. 205 55 16 tires= check. Wait, no sorry! New avant garde 355 18x8 et35 wheels(or F10 M5 wheels)= check and mate.

Problem is I have no clue on what tires to use. I'm hearing square, staggered? With the square should I run a 225 40 18? Staggered 225/40 255/35? With the wider 255 I don't know if I can lower the car like I want.

Also, what about understeer concerns with a lowered vehicle and staggered setup? Relatively inexpensive tire brands? Any inputs?

You can run staggered but it has to be within 1%.

Also, you can go to the "Wheels and Tires Forum" section on this website where you'll find the wheel/tire calculator up top and you can calculate what you can or cannot put on your car...it helps for calculating spacers/etc...

I ran 225/40/18 fronts and 255/35/18 rears (Bridgestone runflats) with no problems on my XI.

You could run 225/40/18 on all four wheels, if you need.

Does your car understeer? If so, why would you want to further unbalance the grip in favor of the rear?

Let me save you some time and just help you get to the end. While I was in the East coast (NJ/NY) I had ran the stock square setup 17" rims on my e90 335xi and everything was fine. I eventually upgraded to 18" style 162's staggered cuz i liked those rims better and thought the wider rears would be great! I went thru two sets of MPS AS3's in this setup. I even switched my front rims from the 18x9 --> the 18x9.5 width rear rims on a front smaller tire 225/40/18 for a little bit of a stretch look cuz i like the deeper convex look of the rear rims (so I had a square set of rear rims 18"x9.5" on staggered tires FRONT: 225/40/18 & REAR: 255/35/18). As Michelin had stated my rear tires wore down twice as fast as my fronts did. Last week I put on a new set of tires because my MPS AS3's were 1mm tread depth remaining on the rears and 6mm remaining on the fronts (keep in mind I'm an XI and started with 4 new tires all around). I could totally hear the transfer case humming away as I was driving which was a cause for concern to me.

So NOW (as of last week). I am on style 162's rims, square rear rims (meaning four 18"x9.5" rims), and four square tires MPSS (I now live in the one season SoCal weather) 225/40/18's and I can safely say... OMG I loveeeeeeeee these MPSS and I love being square tires so I can rotate them.

Advice to you: since you are AWD/XI, stick with a square tire setup

Uhh....You guys realize that the manufacturer [BMW] sells their XI's w/ staggered setup right? Like E92's?
$0.02 = I never had any issues on my XI.

Yes they do, however, as stated in my experience... you have a HUGE delta in wheel rotations between the FRONT's and REAR's which is not very friendly to AWD systems. I had a 50% difference in rotations and got lucky that I didn't blow out my transfer case (I could hear the humming and "feel" a difference). Now that I am back to square with all the same wheel rotations per minute... the car is very smooth.

You can roll your dice as you wish, but I don't recommend staggered for the OP since his intention is NOT to track the car. I never tracked my car either... i did my experiment on two sets of tires.

Nice experiment fazman. Yes, I've decided on the square set. I'll use the 225/40 18. That's the size BMW uses on their front staggered setups. I'm not tracking the car as presumed. Just a nice lowering using the kw v1 setup on some m5 wheels. Stelvio had a point on the staggered set. BMW does make this. However, not sure if it makes a difference but I think they only stagger the sport package vehicles. Sport suspension and seats. Not sure if anything else is different than the non sport package. But mine is the standard 6spd with the 16" wheels on it. Now, if I can just find some seats I may turn mine into the sport package

I run 235/40/18 square on a 18X8.5" wheel, on my E90 X-drive. They are wearing very little.

Previously ran staggered Michelin PSS's. 225 up front, 255 out back. They too also wore great. 24K miles out of the rears.

Yea. I finally choose the bfgoodrich g force comp 2 tires in a 225 40 18x8. I'm hoping I get the same results out of my tires. Especially being lowered about 2.5" give or take an .5".

I'm also on 235/40R18 square using 8.5 inch rims. This is on a LCI E90 xDrive. Also running K&W V1 coilovers like you plan. No problems at all.

I thought Style 162 rears were 18x8.5? Nice job though, where did you pick up the two rears to square it up? I would love to have a square set of the wider 162's but they are hard to come by.

My bad... you are correct, stock Fronts are 18x8 rims and stock Rears are 18x8.5

I'm originally from the east coast... so just look in the regional section. I basically had to pick up 2 loose rear rims as they came up for sale. I originally picked up a set of staggered style 162's from another friend. Once i learned I "could" install the rear wider rim on a front standard size tire (has a little stretch and poke but works)... thats when I said... hey lets try it and it has worked for me since.

I ended up sending all those bent/scratched/roughed up rims to a shop in NJ to get straightened and powder coated back to mint condition (http://needpowdercoating.com)

I would highly suggest having your rims shipped to them for repair/powder coating... because the shop is in a very rough place (If you didn't have bent rims before going to them... you are sure to have bent rims when you arrive at their shop some of NJ's finest roads)

I appreciate the tips Enjoy those square 162's. I will continue looking for my own set but remain super jealous of you until then.
