Replaced valve cover gasket - CEL on, 7 codes, rough idle

Hi all,

I have 2009 E93 and I had my shop to replace valve cover gasket due oil leaking, car was running perfectly fine until gasket is replaced.
3 days ago I took my car to a shop for VCG replacement, car stayed overnight and next day I went to pick up my car, we drove the car with mechanic, all seemed fine, I paid the bill and got in the car, started and realized car was running very rough on idle, shakes a lot and RPM keeps going up and down while on idle then CEL came on, after CEL came on car seemed OK, ran fine on idle.

I was still at mechanic's parking lot, had him to check codes with his snap-on scanner and following messages came up;
Misfire on 1, 2, 3 , 4, 5, 6
2C24 Oxyngen sensors before cat conv mixed up
Then he opened of engine cover, swapped cat sensors as he thought he connected A to B, and B to A. 2C24 kept coming back with misfires.

So I left the car, he called me yesterday and says he opened valve cover again, all seemed OK, gasket is in place, no cracks or anything on gasket or cover.
I remember when I replaced valve cover gasket on my previous car X3 I broke crankcase breather which is located inside valve cover gasket and car had similar symptoms. except codes, I did not have any codes but car had very rough idle, it was fine when I started driving just like my E93.

Any idea?

Attached photo is what I am referring as crank case breather, I might be wrong, I found this photo online.

Is that sludge I see everywhere?
(looks like they would tell you about that
when they did the VCG change)
Or just a bad picture.

Didn't the codes tell you anything.
Common problem is ususally the coils
not getting seated and the hose you
talked about .

I concur to the fact that something wasn't installed properly, or forgot to be re-installed. Could be even an electrical plug that was maybe forgotten.
But that shop is not a very good one: "Then he opened of engine cover, swapped cat sensors as he thought he connected A to B, and B to A" this is just WOW for a pro....in the bad sense.

THIS.

I had mine replaced when I had my VC gasket and ESS replaced. Was pretty badly cracked and causing rough idle and oil consumption.

Shop called me today, he says he opened valve cover again and verified everything is in place and closed but still does same thing, I will go there back and check those CCV hoses and other connectors. :/

Having just done this jab last week make sure the following was done
1. Two ground wires that are part of the coil harness were connected , one is between cylinders 1-2 & second one is between 5-6.
http://cdn4.pelicanparts.com/BMW/tec...mall/pic15.jpg
2. Re-seat the coils
3. Check that the injector harness is plugged in correctly.
4. Make sure that the shop did not use any dielectric grease on the connections between plugs and coils, if they did clean it out with electronics cleaner and q-tips

If you have misfire on all cylinders I doubt that all coils went bad, possible but unlikely, buy a coil on Amazon for about $25 and try it.

Complete instructions on N52 Valve cover.

Also find a new mechanic with BMW specific scanner or buy your own Carly BMW from Google play store and OBD 2 cable

Update:

Shop called yesterday and says car is ready, he does not sure what fixed the issue but it is running fine now, only problem is I have driven about 80 miles since yesterday and I see a bit oil smoke coming from engine and can smell it while I drive.
Shop says it will wear off but I had my car detailed including engine washed a day before taking it to shop so engine was pretty much oil free.
I think this guy messed up the gasket or cracked cover itself :/

Did they charge you for all the checking and re-fixing?

Looks like a hell of a lot of sludge in there... Did you buy the car used?

A loose or leaking CCV hose connector wouldn't be causing misfires or other problems would it?

I replaced by stock PCV valve with an RB PCV valve, but the hose connector to the valve cover is still loose slightly...
