Shipping a Set of Used Tires - Options??

Hi everyone,

I'm selling a set of used MPSS Star Specs from my OEM 513m wheels that I purchased recently, but I keep getting absolutely RIDICULOUS shipping quotes from UPS and FedEx. Most quotes are upwards of $400, which is insane for just tires.

The specs I'm using for shipment are:

24x24x11 at 24lbs each

I paid about $400 to ship the tires AND wheels to Central CT from Southern Cal.....so there is no way the tires alone should cost that much.

Has anyone here recently shipped a set of tires-only? What carrier did you use?

Any advise would be much appreciated.

At these rates, the tires are becoming un-sellable. Understandably, no one wants to pay that much in shipping.

I shipped a set of wheels and tires from upstate NY to Vermont recently. The wheels were wrapped in pallet wrap with cardboard set against the wheels to protect them. That cost me $130 via FedEx Home Shipping with dimensions of 26"x26"x11" and 60lbs ea.

Tires should be much cheaper, but it could still be $40/tire coast to coast. At least with tires you don't really have to worry about them being damaged, so you can just tape the labels on and ship them.

If you don't have a FedEx account, set one up and see what the rates are. I feel I get a decent discount with my FedEx account (and I use it just for my hobby shopping and not for business).

I do have a FedEx account, and the only quotes are much cheaper. Based on the dimensions, tires are treated as an oversized item.

It SHOULD cost $40 each, but it doesn't.

Also, Upstate NY to VT is a super short distance. Everyone who's been interested in my tires thus far are at least halfway across the country.

I think I paid about $100 to ship 4 tires a few years back with fedex. 2 boxes, $50 each or so.

I just ran the numbers you had above and for me to ship from VT to OR it was quoted at $218 with insurance. Not great, but not $400 at least.

FexEx Ground would be cheapest without box. Just slap on label and ship.

They require you to put them in a box if they're used because of possible debris in the tires. At least that's what they told me when I tried using no box.
