OIL CHANGE GONE BAD!!!

So I go to get an oil change last tuesday, and because I go to college I leave my car in the garage, but my dad went to use my E90 to pick up some coffee the other day and this huge oil slick was on the driveway. The low oil warning is going off on my idrive, and I dont know what the fuck to do. I think the mechanic at the service center (Note I did not purchase my car at this dealership), did a half ass job since my CA was able to put the oil change under warranty parts so I did not have to pay for the oil change, thus the mechanic did not get paid for the work.

Looks like theres too much oil....bring it back in to that dealer and give them hell
If they dont even know how to change oil...I would never bring my car there for other services

That sucks, but I think I know what the problem is. The cap to the oil filter was not properly aligned when it was reinstalled so when it was tighten it did not seal correctly causing the oil to blow out of it when oil pressure increased.

OK, take a deep breath, everything will be fine

It looks like they just didnt torque the oil filter cap down tightly enough, causing it to allow oil out. Or didt fit the new O ring seal properly on the oil filter cap

Do not worry, this shouldnt have caused any major damage

I have seen this happen 4 times now on different BMW's

Best tell them to pick it up via a flatbed and take it back to be fixed.

they need to make shure the O ring seals are on properly and the cap is torqued on properly.
Then top up the oil and wash the engine bay AND the cars undercarrage.

Sorry to hear about this problem, but again , dont worry, it will be OK

Is there a way to remedy the situtation on my own? Because I have to wait until monday to bring the car in, I dont know if I should drive it or just get a tow to haul it over. I'm afraid for the engine.

You can get some engine degreaser fluid to help clean your driveway.

it mixes with the oil and then allows you to wash it away with water

The oil filter cap is the large black one in your pic with the oil around it

Take it by hand and see if you can turn it.

If it turns with just a little force then it wasnt put on properly

You need to then turn it on tight

You then need to check the oil level and top it up ( usually not that much oi escapes, but it may look like a lot, but its thinly spread )

Problem is the oil on the engine
It will begin to smell when it gets hot and may make a bit of smoke, so it needs to be cleaned off

Not only should dealer clean car thoroughly, but they should also provide you with materials to clean your driveway and a decent gift certificate for some accessories. Show them those pics and see what they have to say...

Dude, your engine is probably damaged. I would fight for a new motor or at least a free extended warranty. If you have no luck, then threaten lawsuit.

If you can , the best is to have the dealer fetch it via a flatbed tow truck.

i bet the underside of the car will be full of oil and will be dripping it everywhere

Make them do all the work to fix their mistake

Unless it was driven at extended periods like this, it is very unlikely

As I said, this is unfortunately not that uncommon, on many makes of cars

Wow, it breaks my heart to see these things happen. Fleet is correct as usual and he is always so zen about these things. I would be very angry as I'm sure you are. Take the advice to have them pick the car up on a flatbed. Ask them for a loaner to be delivered to you. I understand that you didn't buy the car from them, so they will probably want to tell you to go pound sand - but as unemotionally as possible explain to them that their negligence is the cause of this problem and you have been inconvinienced enough. You might even get them to pay for the products you have to buy to clean your garage and driveway. Also make them clean the engine compartment.

I'm sure some will feel that all that is excessive and we'll get the usual "these things happen" replies, but unless mistakes cost the dealership and/or cause them some pain they have no motivation to remedy the causes. This may have happened because the tech was under pressure to get too much work done in too short a time for instance... so having to bring your car in at their expense and re-do the work plus cleaning it..etc,etc. saves them how much? A car dealership is a business. If it costs more to do poor work than good work they will be motivated to do good work.

ouch...that look like the time i change my oil and forgot to check the o ring on the filter. what happen in my situation was the old ring came off the filter and i tighten the new filter on over it. of course it didnt seal and oil all over my drive way when i took off. this was not my e90...

It does appear that the oil blew out past the o-ring on the filter housing as others have pointed out. I would first call the service writer and tell him/her the symptoms. I would imagine that they will offer to send someone for the car but in any event, do not drive it until the cap is secured and the oil is replaced.

BTW, the BMW dealership technician is paid to perform oil changes under warranty regardless of where the car was purchased.
