Attack of the armrest....

Anyone else got bruised fingers from their sliding armrests?

When it's forward and then lifted to get something out from inside it slams back down hard. Banged mine a couple of times and severely bruised the wife's this weekend. Nearly had my five year old sons tonight too.

Seems like a bad design fault to me. Or is it user error, can it be fixed into the forward position so it doesn't slide back when lifted?

Top tip.

I'll try the wife's fingers tomorrow, I've been getting way too much shit from her lately anyway!

Why on earth would you leave your fingers under a lid that could slam shut!?

It's not the lid slamming back down that gets you. I'm not that stupid, neither is my wife.

It's lifting the lid up when it's extended. You naturally put your fingers under the front to lift it up. When it reaches the fully vertical position, the extension suddenly slams back down into the unextended position, trapping your fingers.

It really is easy to forget to slide it back before lifting it up, as 3 members of my family will testify. Especially if you're not the one that slid it forward in the first place.

Mine has never done that, tbh I don't even know what you mean! Mine stays slid forward all the time, I open it quite often and it always stays forward!?

Even if it does slide back I don't understand how or where your fingers could get trapped!?

The sliding top part drops back down into the unexteneded position and your fingers get trapped between that and the fixed part underneath. The gap under the front lip, where you naturally put your fingers to lift it is too small when unextended. So when it slams back unexpectedly into the unextended position you get trapped fingers.

Maybe there's something wrong with mine, or do I have to do something to make it stay fixed in the forward position?

Why does it slam back down unexpectedly? Surely it only closes when you push it shut, in which case you don't need to have your fingers underneath it?

Mine just stays slid forward, you need to push it back quite firmly to slide it back.

No, you don't have to push it back firmly when it is in the upright position. For the third time, it drops back extremely quickly, without warning, and can easily catch you out if you've forgotten it's in the extended position. For example with passengers who have no idea I've slid it forward.

I think the quick answer, rather than doubting, or assuming my whole family is being stupid, would be to say that your own doesn't do that.

I never assumed your family was stupid, where on earth did that come from!?

I'm the only person trying to help you here, but if you don't want my help then that's fine.

Apologies, but every post seemed to be asking me why I needed my fingers under, or that it surely wasn't doing what I said.

Short fuse, tired, fried brain from baby sleep deprivation, apologies.....

The sliding armrest in my F32 has never done that, yours might be faulty? When I've got it extended forward it stays forward when lifting.

Now that I think about it though, I think if I leave my hand hanging on it when it's up (e.g I've opened it so my passenger can get something out and I'm going to close it again) it's slid down once or twice, but that's because of the weight of my arm hanging off it, and not it simply slamming shut on its own

No problem.

I've had a play and think I see what you mean if you mean with the armrest up it slides downward and backwards and traps your fingers?

If so then maybe when you slide the armrest forward you're not sliding it all the way so that it engages in the resistance that holds it in the forward position?

He's nearly there! 10 weeks old, no feeds between 7pm and 7am, just wakes up a couple of times for a noisy grumble in the night, but goes back down.

Been hard work, but wife will have it cracked again in the next week or so. Hope so, she's a lot angrier than me without sleep!

Had a look at this tonight Alex440

If I extend my armrest fully forward, and then lift it, I have to push pretty hard to get it to slide backwards - trapping my bloody finger ends

So, now I have recovered and stopped cursing you I can offer the following:

Either (1) you are not pushing/sliding it fully forward so it engages with some resistance or (2) it's fucked!

If I slide mine partially forward, it will exhibit the behaviour you describe though.

Hope this helps mate
