Shiny steering wheel

I'm sure I've seen a post on here about this but cba finding it.

My 16,000 mile M Sport's tiller has suddenly gone quite shiny, I looked at pics of when it was new and it was a lovely matte texture.

I got in it the other day after it had been sitting in the sun and the steering wheel was actually moist and I mean really moist, I'm assuming the heat was bringing out my Clinique moisturiser out of the leather.

Any idea how to get it back to a new ish condition, it's only 16,000 miles, can you see your face in a 100k miler?

Cheers

Try Dr Leather cleaner or pure soap solution. Pure soap flakes are virtually non-existent but can be purchased in liquid form ("pure liquid soap flakes") from Wilko or Tesco.

I actually prefer my slightly worn and a little shinier steering wheel (at 41k miles) than how it was at the start. It was too dry initially and made a rustling noise as it slid through my hands. It's quieter and smoother now, and still looks good to me.

I clean mine with methylated spirits then protect with supernatural leather protector. It brings back the matt look for a while.

Mine is on 30k now though so getting shinier, and I'm now really considering getting it retrimmed in alcantara by royal steering wheels.

I use Dr Leather wipes, they work well on a newish wheel, but need to be used regularly. The oils from your hands builds up again. I suppose there must be a sealant that could be used out there somewhere?

Most matte interior cleaners will work. Meguiar's.. Armour All..

Sonax is good but you need to pre-clean before applying it else it will be too sticky.

Dr Leather wipes worth a shout as well.

Could you post some pics with mileage fella? I would try any method that works.
Done just under 10K but only 3k put on by me. I tend to hold the steering wheel at the bottom but it is slightly shiny top right from the previous owner.

It's funny how OC I am about my car - you should see the state of my desk at work!

I currently have Jack from Royal Steering Wheels doing exactly this for me, ETA 16th May. Alcantara all round, no band at the top and M Stitching

So, the 335d (first three pics)...only 12,500 and got the car at 7,500 miles (three months ago) was shiny when I got it but got it back to this...

Then the MRS 118i. It has 17,500 on the clock, we got it at 13,000 but I only started to try to get the shiny steering wheel sorted two months ago, it was VERY shiny before...

Both cleaned with standard baby wipes every couple of days and Dr Leather wipes couple times a month.

Just cleaned mine with meths and the cloth went black with all the dirt coming out of the leather, its much better now and ive treated with autoglym leather balm. Thanks for the tip Teaston .

Yes I'm sure it will take some of the dye out, I only do it occasionally when it goes really shiny, you wouldn't want to do it every week!

I did wonder if some of the black was dye, my wheel was really bad you could almost see your face in it and i had already tried leather cleaner . My car has approx 50000 miles on it and probably never had the wheel cleaned properly, hopefully now it will clean up with leather cleaner.

Garage List
Angelwax Heaven for Leather works best I find.

Dr Leather wipes are also pretty good, and are more convenient.

If your steering wheel is shiny you can take all purpose cleaner and spray it on the towel and then agitate the steering wheel to make all the bacteria to come out. If you want to get rid of stickiness look at instructions below. Hope this helps
