2008 N54 Can or Dcan and cable questions

I know the forum is sick to death of questions that lead to answers built on mythology and theory but I need the help so here it goes.

I purchased a cable from Amazon.ca about 6 months ago that I finally got around to trying. As you guessed from my posting, it does not work. I did check the FTDI PID and its = FTDIBUS\COMPORT&VID_0403&PID_6001, which is supposed to be authentic.

My car is a 2008 335i sport and the cable I am using is a white pc board version that has what seems to be the right chips, according to an internet post. My questions are:

1) Up to what model year and car do you not need to short pins 7 and 8? I searched for hours and everybody refers to 2007 but some say 2008.

2) Is a 2008 a Can or Dcan protocol? What is the manufacturing date where they changed over? Is there some other way to tell what I have?

3) What is the easiest way to test connectivity? I am am currently using the Dcan.exe that came with inpa and installed the FTDI drivers from the FTDI site.

I am ona Surface Pro 4 running windows 10 and have inpa installed. Everything runs fine. I tried com ports 1 through 5 and I did set the latency properly. The red led light comes on when I start but turns off almost immediately.

I did order another cable but it will take time to get here so any help is mucho appreciated.

Thanks for reading my post!
