Dyson Or Shark
Well the old hoover went bang yesterday while the missus was doing a spring clean. it was a Dyson DC14 animal from 2007 and has been used nearly every day since and has been hammered to be fair but she finally gave up the ghost.
It had many gaffer tape repairs and just kept going. Have taken it upon myself to assist the missus in getting a new hoover but we are both undecided between the Shark or the Dyson DC40 Animal. Any ideas chaps? Have 2 under 5s so the hoover must be "fit for purpose". Budget circa £300. |

We have 3 children (9, 6, 1) and use a Dyson cordless and use it for pretty much everything in terms of the day to day hoovering. The cleaner does use the DC23 Animal but I used to do the whole house with the cordless and found it fine - quicker too, as it's so manoeuvrable.
Not used a Shark so can't comment on that one.

We have a handheld dyson dc56, a dc41 normal style and just got a v8 absolute. They are all great (and still use our really old dc04 on the cars outside).
Not cheap but I really rate them all. The v8 is the most impressive, the suction for a cordless is something else, leagues above a gtech air ram k9. So good I've converted my sister and mum to the v8 too. arent shark American? If anything like their engines they will be huge with little grunt lol |

Thinking of getting one for wife's birthday, a lighter Hoover would be a bonus as she ain't getting any younger. |

Just replaced a dyson with a SEBO and have to say find it far superior. Recommendation from family and friends and so far very impressed. Still uses bags (!) but at least you don't get covered in a film of dust when it needs emptying...

Just bought a flexible hose which makes using the crevice tool and bristle-ended thingy much easier to use when hoovering the car. Brilliant bit of kit; would definitely buy again. The only thing to watch for is that occasionally the bottom of the bagless canister falls open and dumps the contents - the design may have been improved since I bought ours in March 2015.

Come on....you guys don't really do the vacuum cleaning do you?
I have a Dyson cordless and a proper Dyson, and there is just no comparison. A cordless as good as it is, just doesn't hold a candle against a 230V version. |

It's a bit like a Mazda MX5 or an X6. Sometimes light and lower power is quicker; just imagine your house is the West Circuit...

The vacuum went to the tip as, despite cutting out every few minutes, there was "no fault found". Miele refused to send and engineer to diagnose/fix a fault with the washing machine which was still well within the 10 year guarantee period. A local independent electrical retailer fixed it in 30 minutes - a blocked vent pipe. Didn't even need parts. Wouldn't recommend Miele to anyone.

If you want bagless get a new Miele Blizzard CX1. Sebo Airbelt D4 Premium is probably better though. The Sebo X4 is also a brilliant upright.
For quick cleanups, it's hard to beat the Bosch Athlet cordless. Since getting it the Airbelt comes out less and less. |

Why do the vacuuming in the first place? I've been using one of these for the past few years and we've picked up a vacuum maybe once every month to just do the stairs!

Doesn't seem to be many Shark followers here, you're all Dyson fan boys
Bought a Shark for the household duties about 18 months ago now and have to admit it is superb, same bag less tech as a Dyson, tools stored onboard and very well put together. The fact you can lift the body off the wheels makes it ideal for doing stairs etc (so I'm told ) We got this one, or maybve its predecessor. Put it this way, I'd definitely buy another one over a Dyson. Got a cordless GTech too, but as NISFAN says, the cordless vac's will never be as good as the 230v ones.. |

I (and family) have had a few Dysons and they are overpriced plastic crap. Had a Vax or two. Just rubbish. Done a lot of research into vacuums and bought a Sebo Felix. It is the best vacuum by far. One of the reasons I chose it was that it uses bags. We have cats and it uses about 1 bag per 2 months (I think bags are £1). The advantage of using bags is the bag is the primary filter so when you replace it the bag. the filter is brand new. With bagless, you have to remember to wash filters and you can never get them that clean. Also Sebo is a bit sneaky with power. It will say it's 700W, but that's only the brush head power. This vacuum is powerful enough to pull it's self along! |

I went from Dyson to a Sebo upright in 2007 and it's still working as it did on day one. Also have a bagged Miele cylinder hoover from 2014 which is excellent. We didn't need a second hoover, but bought it heavily discounted when the EU were banning the higher wattages - to make sure we keep a powerful vacuum for as long as possible!

Never heard of the Shark ones but we have (in true Tengocity style) 3 vacuum cleaners currently. The small sporty one (Dyson cordless), the old high mileage one (Miele) that's about 12 years old, and a newer Miele one.
Like cars they all have their pros and cons, although none of my hoovers (sorry NISFAN ) are modified in anyway! The Dyson cordless is expensive but actually really handy to quickly nip round and clean up after the cats etc. We found it superb in our old place on the carpets we had there, but less good on the hard floors we have now mostly. The old Miele has given great and faultless service over the 12 years, though I didn't find it so good on thicker carpets compared to the Miele with it's motorised head. It now lives in the garage for car cleaning duties and I have a special car cleaning accersory kit for it with long attachments for crevices etc and a mini motorised head for the mats. The new Miele is similar to the old one but bought a few months back, the top of the range Cat & Dog one. To be honest I've never used it ever as we have a cleaner and then I just use the Dyson for a quick clean in between. But the wife says it's brilliant- like the old one but with a better head for the carpets. The Dyson concept is superb but I think the build quality is a bit iffy. We've already had to replace the Li-ion battery, and the charginf cradle never quite works as you want because the plastic is a bit cheap and too flexible to be robust enough for normal household domestic use. I wouldn't want to be without it though. The Miele's have been faultless and feel bomb proof.
