Bluetooth audio and iPhone don't get along

The BT audio and iPhone music works some of the time. The only way I can get it started is to first select a song on the phone.

After that then all the functions work. Searched but had no luck. Tried the forget and un-pair and then re-pair.

Ideas?

I've really been frustrated with this same problem. I find it's a real pita to get music playing quickly.
I usually use Spotify and sometimes Spotify appears in idrive, other times not and I have to start the service first on my phone and then select my phone in idrive. Confusing :

Bring it to the dealer. There have been a bunch of software updates the fix these issues to the Headunit. (nav system)

I have this problem sometimes to. It is not just a BMW problem. My infinity has the same issue as do many of GM cars. It's an Apple issue. Didn't have the issue until we all moved to the iPhone 6 and 7.

I don't think it is an Apple issue. My two other cars both have QNX implementations and work perfectly with all our iPhones.

It's not an Apple issue. Works fine in other cars with different systems, and the newer GMs with the CarPlay enable ones, even if you don't use it, works fine via bluetooth.

It's something on the backend.

The latest iOS beta improved it some, now it only struggles 2 out of 3 times for me haha

It's probably a BMW BT issue. My iPhone 6S works flawlessly using Apple CarPlay but that goes over WiFi.

Did you try using USB?

I've done both and USB works perfectly, no issues whatsoever. BT only that causes trouble. I have a MY16 with ID4.

I just went to IOS 10.3.1 and seems a little better in the BMW. But my new Chevy is worse. Have to pick a song to play most of the time the first time. Wired is fine. Now if I can find a way to kill off CarPlay when wired through USB.

You can disable it on the car how omasou described above, or turn it off on the iPhone itself.

The car method is safer, in case you do want to use it with another vehicle (say a rental without gps) sometime.

I don't have CarPlay on the BMW. Have yet to figure out how to disable it on the Chevy.
