Curb rash

How does curb rash repair actually work? From what I've read the wheel gets sanded and painted? Does this affect the strength of the wheel much depending if its a minor scuff or heavy rash?

The previous owner curbed all four wheels ranging from a small to medium amount. Is there clear coat on these wheels and how would that affect the repair if it does? I'm debating whether to get them fixed or just get new wheels. It looks like the standard cost is around $100 per wheel.

Thanks

Scratches get sanded and deeper ones get filled in (not sure what they use for filler).

After that standard paint procedure follows, primer, paint, clear coat.

Depending on the shop and their quality of work, you may see clear coat overspray, or clear coat may start to peel off after a little while. There are also places that will repair it and you'll never be able to tell there was work done. So check reviews on particular shops.

Personally I have hyper silver wheels and that paint option usually costs more to get done. I had a silver spray paint can of wheel paint. Sprayed some of it in a small container and then used a paint brush to paint over the curb rash. Can't tell the difference and can't see the rash unless you really look for it.

Correct. Most of them can be removed with sanding, though the deeper ones get filled with bondo then sanded.

From personal experience, doing the metal work to get the scuffs out isn't difficult at all, getting the paint to match is a whole different story. Getting all 4 powder coated is really the only option if you want the finish to look professional ($$$).

I would suggest getting new wheels if they are under $1500 or so new, OP. The strength isn't affected at all.

I'm leaning towards getting them repaired for various reasons. I like 18s for the look and comfort, tire sizes are good to where it doesn't cost over 1k to replace with AS3+ or PSS, and it's one of the few BMW wheels I really like along with the 313 18s from the 135is. I'd really go 19 for the 230s and 313s from the 335is cuz I put comfort slightly above looks.

I remember a while back someone posted a video of Mercedes pot hole testing their factory wheels vs reps and I've been leary ever since of since of getting after market wheels. I like the BBS FI and FIR but they don't make them in 18s in 8-9 inches wide. Guess I'll yelp a few places and send pics for quotes for repair and possible powder- I would really like these in Gunmetal.

Thanks again

Which wheels are they? I'm sure you could find some used here in good shape.

I have 193's. I've seen 193, 230 and 313 wheels only go for $700-2000 depending on style but for that price I'd rather shell out to repair mine.

If you were local here I could get you a set. Know of at least 3 guys selling for cheap. Too bad shipping would cost you more than the wheels would...
