330d to 340i MPG

Starting to test drive a few replacements for the 330d which has averaged 43mpg over 45k miles. So the replacement list is:-

340i
335d
435d
520d
Merc E Class 220

Just wondering what I would get out of the 340i as a comparison to the 330d. I am guessing about 33MPG - does that sound about right?

As I do 18K miles a year it is a consideration.

I've averaged 31.8mpg so far in 1,800 miles since new and still climbing, it's already better than my two previous 328i's (both F30).

Gone from pre LCI 330D F31 to LCI 340 F31 and mpg gone from average 39 to 28 with almost identical use. Pretty much what I expected and not enough to take the smile off my face every start-up!

OBC showing 35.3mpg after 10,500 miles. I've never reset it since new.

Ive gone from 335d to m140i with mpg falling from around 32 to 24. The 330d would probably have been 20% better than the 335d.

31.1 on my 340i after 1900 miles. Had a 330d before, which got me 38 after 45k miles.

Rule of thumb is deduct 10 from whatever you're getting in the 330d

You'll be roughly 10 mpg down in most similar scenarios...

As others, I average around 32mpg in fairly mixed driving conditions driving without thinking about consumption. if I was careful I reckon 35 is achievable. on a motorway run low to mid 40's is easily achievable

I seem to be about 10mpg down going from a 330d F30 to a 340i F31 at 10k pa.

The Touring isn't as slippery as the saloon, so this should be nearer for like cars.

My 330d did 45mpg at 15k pa and dropped to about 42mpg at my later 10k pa usage. Fuelly says 31.5mpg for my 340i over 6k. Great, I was only expecting 29mpg. It warms up much quicker and suits my 12 mile commute much better.

High 30's on a run are easy.

Thanks for all the feedback.

Test drove a 340i but didn't like it at all. So back to a 435d i think......

Oh and 10mpg less is about spot on.

If you have a look at the two fuelly listings in my signature... the 340i has been driven similarly to the 330d over similar routes...

Wow... There's no way you'd get me back into the 330d having had my 340i for about 8 months now...

I know i am going to get shot for this but here goes.....

I actually thought the 335d sounded better. The 340i was all noise and look at me. The 335d had a deeper more purposeful sound to it (yes i know it's false) which wasn't as tiring to my ears. More, or the same, go but without the show......... I guess i am getting old! I do 20K miles a year so need some comfort.

Have to say the new 520d was very, very impressive.

Thanks Dave. Your figures back up exactly what I saw on an extended test drive - about 10mpg difference. I thought i would be blown away by the 340i but i wasn't at all sorry!

So looking at a 435d now........

I'm surprised!

I can't wait to get shot of my 640d and the engine is the main reason - sounds rubbish... well it sounds like a diesel.

I don't like the Active Sound in any BMW, but I do agree that it sounds worse in petrol cars than it does in diesels though.

I suppose you have different buying preferences which is shown by the fact you like the 520d which I imagine is more about the overall package than just the car?

It's seriously impressive, nothing like the old 5 series which i drove and hated. Not as slow as you think and handles like it's a small car. Better than my F30 for sure. Quiet, comfortable and just feels so much better put together.

May look at some 530d figures as well as the 435d.........

Not sure about that. on going from a 335D to a 340i, I've gone from 39.8 to 29.7, i.e., almost exactly 10 different, Should be a bigger difference from a 330D, imho.

Spot on
After 35k miles in my F31 330D (most of which with MPPK), my mpg was 42
With 2k miles on the clock, my 440i is showing 31.3. I suspect that will be nudged up to 32 in time with some more motorway miles
Am I bothered? Nope. My annual mileage has reduced considerably to 12k now so petrol makes sense

My 440i is approaching 2 years old and has 36000 on the clock. I've average 32mpg which is fantastic especially how I drive it.
