Actually i think I found my answer...it comes on when the headlights actually come on?

my DRL are on but that doesn't make the led come on..

For me it turns on when my DRL turn on. Dont think it would be different for you guys.

Anyone got an idea why, when set to auto and drls set to on through the idrive, the whole headlights come on, not just the rings?

I think you have to code the car to use the angel eyes, mine wasn't set as default

where is the sensor that detects whether the headlights need to come on? Is it the thing on back of my rear view mirror?

That little green LED light comes on when the auto headlights have turned on. If the green light is lit, your headlights are on, if the green light isn't lit, your headlights are off.

thanks for the confirmation chaps. i guess my led wasn't on as the headlights weren't on at the time then as it wasn't dark! LOL
