Exhaust rattle / vibration

Hi All,

Just picked up a 340 with MPPSK this past weekend. I noticed that while idling on any kind of incline or decline that the exhaust seems to vibrate /rattle a little. Is this normal and has anyone else experienced this? It's not crazy loud but it doesn't happen all the time that's why I notice it.

I would say not normal at all. I don't have any rattle on mine.

One owner mentioned on here that he had a similar problem and he went to the dealer. They found that his exhausted was installed incorrectly at the port and they reinstalled it for him.

Maybe get it checked out.

When I picked up my 440 after BMW installed the MPPSK I though I heard some rattling but I think it went away. Could have been the HVAC in the building but I'm curious as to how this turns out for you. Keep us updated.

I had it too on the passenger side but seems to have disappeared... I will complain about it though when I take it in

Yes, I got the same problem when I pick up car at end of February, after a month I hear the metal rattling sound from rear driver side exhaust tip, after i just being the car back to dealer, dealer found out the exhaust flap bushing was lose, end up dealer just replace the whole exhaust system under warranty!

I just installed the AFE full catback and it has a valve that utilizes the factory valve motor, you just take the little motor off the stock muffler and fit it in the new one.

Now every time I cold start it I hear a rattle on the rear driver side around the muffler but couldn't figure out what was causing it. It goes away after 20 or so seconds. Now that I'm reading this I believe it to be something associated with the valve. A cotter pin-looking piece of metal connects the motor to the valve itself.

That could be be culprit. Maybe when installed from the factory it's in there nice and tight but if then done again later on it isn't replaced perfectly. I will investigate tomorrow morning at start up.

I noticed a slight rattle too on the way home when I picked up the car. Unfortunately I haven't had much time to drive it this week but I plan to take a longer trip today to get a few exterior mods done. Want to see if I get the rattle again--like everyone else has said is sounds like its' coming from rear passengers side under the car. Mine is also a 340 6MT w/ MPPSK...

After my suspension install the mid-pipe on my MPPSK was slightly hitting a cross-bar causing an intermittent rattle. Took it back in, they re-clocked the mid-pipe and it cleared right up. You could take a look under there yourself and see if the mid-pipe, or something else, is contacting anything. But since you just picked it up, might as well bring it back in, should be an easy fix.

I actually picked up the car this weekend and the next day went on vacation so I've had no time to mess around with this. When I get back on Sunday I will take some more time to figure this out.

So like I said earlier, I started the car this morning and immediately ran to the back of the car, got on the ground, and checked the valve from outside the piping. I put my finger on the metal pin between the valve and the little motor and sure enough, the rattling went away when I held the pin still.

Haven't had time to consider a solution yet, but it shouldn't take much. Not saying this will be the cause of everyone else's rattling problem, but definitely worth checking out first. Also, the valve is on the driver's side, so not sure what could be rattling for those of you claiming it to be coming from the passenger side.

Have my 440i mppsk for three day.Rattle/vibration passenger side under acceleration. Returned to service, they found exhaust was too close to heat sheild and making contact during acceleration. 45 minute fix. Install of mppsk was done at port.

Mine only rattles when I'm not moving / idling.

I have a service appointment next Friday.

so apparently when the car got hot the exhaust would hit the heat shield. The dealer adjusted the position of the exhaust to resolve.
