A45 AMG to M140i or 340i touring with performance and sound pack ?

Now, as the title suggests this is something I am looking at The sale of my flat will mean the A45 is paid for ... and I am a car nut with no common sense and a reliance on man maths

Nowt wrong with the A45 AMG (it's a facelift so 381hp). In fact, far from it - all of the common complaints are rubbish - it is great and quick ... but ...

There is no decent sound !!! A 2 litre is never going to compete with a straight six and I have come from a Z4 35iS which is standard with a BMW sports exhaust.

Now, an M140i auto is almost as quick and probably more involving due to the lack of 4wd ... but - and the reason for posting here - is that the 340i auto touring with the added performance of the power/sound pack appeals.

Bigger, yes, but I have come from a Z4 35iS and 2 3 series coupes ...

I am guessing no dealer is going to have a 340i with the performance pack on it ? Or am I wrong ?

Views on whether the 340i with the added pack will apppeal - it is listed at I think 4.9 to 62 for the touring but I can't imagine it is not quicker with 360 bhp ?

I test drove a 340i with the MPPSK last year so that is possible. If you're after sound don't overlook the C43.

How did you like your Z4 35iS?

I had a 30i for a few years and really liked it, and love the idea of getting a 35iS and going to town with top notch suspension, brakes, exhaust, and power increase!

It's not a Boxster, but in isolation it was great fun and miles more enjoyable to drive than any 3 series I've ever driven.

In answer to your question is ask what you really need your car to do? A tourer is a great all rounder, but it lacks the agility and fun factor of the 140i. Do you need the space?

A close friend of mine has a c43. I thought It sounded great before I heard the mppsk. The c43 is quite raspy and poppy, quite high pitched in comparison to the mppsk.

After I picked up the 340i mppsk there was no doubt it had the better sound. It's way deeper, and doesn't have that Japanese rasp.

The c43 might be confused with a great exhaust on an STI if you couldn't see the car. Which there's nothing wrong with, just not what I was looking for.

I loved the 35iS. I had two. First one in black looked great but was a nightmare for 3 months ... in the dealer 5 times I think for a month in total and got rejected. Second one was in metallic white and looked great + was in the in the main faultless for 2 years.

The 35iS is an experience every time you drive it. The exhaust makes it. The adaptive suspension was good and in sport mode the exhaust was great. Proper pops and bangs + it blipped on downshifts. It turned heads with it's looks and the noise. The performance at 4.8 to 62 (conservative I think) made it a dream to drive and overtake in. A big GT though more than a sports car.

The reason I sold it was practicality which I need at least a bit of. The bloke I sold it too - when he realised it was a good genuine car - thought I was mad ... and still has it, having added about 20K to the 7K I did in it. i think he is 'using' it a bit better than I did up north compared to London !

I don't need the space but have had a 330i touring back in 2003. It was ok space wise but not too big. The A45 is surprisingly tardis like inside and not as small as people think. I find the 1 series more cramped but loved the M135i engine noise when I drove a couple. I just found the steering vague and it was like driving a car on eggshells compared to the A45 ! I read that the M140i has sorted this ?

I have bought cars before just because I like them - a Rover 827 Vitesse years ago springs to mind. No need for the space but I liked it so bought it. The 340i is a bit like that ... don't need the space but the appeal of a slightly different 340i with perf and sound pack is potentially greater than the more sensible and quicker M140i.

Given I have a tourer I think sporty estates are the coolest cars on the road so no argument from me on that front!

I'd ring some local dealers to see if any have a mppk kitted car. I can only compare performance of stock with the tuning box I have on mine not the mppk but they make for rapid machines once fettled.
The box I have states 380bhp and 400lb or torque and if you put one one a mppk fitted car it takes it to 400bhp.

I have purposefully not gone to hear a mppk kitted 340 in the flesh in case my credit card becomes lighter...
