Camera advice
Hi all, need some advice so thought I would come to this font of all knowledge.
My daughter wants a digital camera, something a bit better than a phone camera for capturing the key moments as her little boy reaches them, and maybe a few other life moments as well... She doesnt want too flash, and wont ever be taking professional stuff, but wifi connectivity is required and i think they should look for something as future proof as possible.... So - suggestions please. Assume a budget of £500 plus or minus a bit. Thanks! |

As long as she doesn't mind the bulk of a DSLR, and they are better for creating really good shots, then I don't think she needs to spend anymore than the Canon EOS 1300D.
Its about £300 at the moment, and includes wifi and HD video capability. It will be miles better than a phone camera. |

Sony RX100 mk2 - probably the best pocket camera ever made, mk3 is also in your budget and has a rotating 180 degree screen but whether thats worth the premium over the mk2 with it's 90 degree tilt screen, probably not IMHO

Was about a grand when it first came out but due to the age it's a fantastic camera for the money. |

Worth checking out the Panasonic Lumix GF7, c.£370 on Amazon I think. I had the GF2 and GF3 a few years ago and both were fantastic, very DSLR like. The GF7 is fairly compact, has wifi and now comes with pancake type lens with zoom. Sold them as my Mrs was frustrated with me having too many cameras - I bought a Nikon DSLR.

On the basis that the best camera in the world is the one you've got with you, I'd stick with a smart phone that has a decent pixel count.
No they're not proper cameras but I get a lot more pleasure from the umpteen photos that my wife uploads to our shared Dropbox of our children than I do from all the times that I've forgotten to take my DSLR with me. The ever-present smartphone has a lot going for it.

If your daughter has an iPhone and can live with the the limits of a fixed focal length lens the the DXO One is a worthy add-on.

If she has an I-phone, thats the problem. Samsung phones have far better picture quality, night and day between mine and my Mrs I-phone. I6 and S6 edge (old phones now)
However, I'd +1 this Quote:
I also have a Cannon dslr, that does not get used as often as it should....its a task to take it out, and if you dont really know what your doing with a dslr (which I really dont, always experimenting!) then a small point and shoot is the better, easier option.

Cheers guys, she has an iPhone 6S but finds it limiting from time to time
I think one of the compacts mentioned sounds ideal - and guess then it comes down to personal preference.... Sony seem to get good write ups... |

if she wants a camera compact good zoon panosonic lumia range like the TZ75 i think its up to is a great camera.
question why does she need a camera though... i mean i have compact high zoom , a bridge camera and DSLR and in all honest i cant remember the last time i used them. camera on phones are becoming so good there is no point in them unless your a complete picture junkie

She has been using her phone so much as a camera with the baby that she is flattening the battery all the time. Plus I think she feels a decent camera will last a few years and allow her to capture better photos as he gets older.....
