USB iDrive oddness

My previously working USB pen that I had plugged into the centre console stopped working during playback. It looked like the track was still playing (time counter still moving) but no sound. Trying to skip tracks didn't work either. Changing the source from external USB to radio and back again didn't work as it just said the USB wasn't recognised.

It's a Kingston 32gb USB pen formatted as Fat32 with around 25gb of space used. The total tracks are less than the 16,000 limit. The device is only a couple of months old and works perfectly well in a PC. Trying an older and smaller USB pen produced similar problems in that it wasn't been recognised and when it did it would become unresponsive. Again this device works fine in a PC and check disks on both USB pens show no problems.

There is no sat nav in the car so no glove box USB connection.

I am assuming it's a problem with IDrive and is it possible to reset it?

I think you can press and hold the volume knob for 30 seconds and there's a soft reboot... You might try that...

You might also try the options menu on the idrive and there is something in there about updating services etc..

Cheers Dave, I'll try the volume knob soft reset a try.

I can't say I noticed anything within the menus but have another look.

The volume knob didn't do anything so just trying an update. Fingers crossed.

To use an iphone 7 do I need one of those y cables? It currently says it is unable to play media. It's just the basic stereo and Bluetooth

Just a thought, has the stick died? Tried it in your PC?

You should be able to just plug the standard usb cable for the iPhone into the port in the armrest... then access through "media"...

Have you checked whether or not there is a software update for the media connectivity... you can do that on the bmw website... it is not updated over the air you need to manually update...

Mine does this about once a month. I just complete the journey on radio until I can restart the car and then the USB stick works again.

The update seems to be working, touch wood. USB sticks are playing and searching them seems to be quicker too.
Iphone still won't play even though it is recognised. I'm going to pick up a second hand Y cable with the 30 pin connection, which seem to go cheap. I'll try it with an old ipod touch, which is recognised too but not the media. I can't believe the lightning Y cable is £50+, ouch.
