The new 5 series
I auto crossed the new 540i. And let me tell you, it's garbage. Yes it's very comfortable and decently fast. But it feels like a boat. I don't know if some of the reviewers are paid off but there was definitely turbo lag, even in sport mode especially when the step down button was pressed. The steering wheel as expected was dead. You couldn't really tell what each wheel was doing only if you were sitting right above it would you be able to tell.
It was a terrible idea for BMW to advertise the sportiness of the 5 series. They should have done a course that tested the comfort of it. The Ultimate driving machine shtick is getting old and misused. Maybe they should advertise as the Ultimate comfort or limousine machine. That is all.

unfortunately this isnt an e39 anymore. my f10 is probably an even worse handling car then the G30. stable, "decent" handling. decent composure and turn in for such a large sedan but falls short of old school BMW expectations. |

the f10 has to be my favourite designed BMW. (no bias obviously) I've already had a few people say they agree that it looks better then the g30. the way the f10 takes styling cues from the e34 and so perfectly blends it with a modern design looks ridiculously good on style 269 rims and silver paint I just cant get over how good it looks.. but it handles like a god damn boat. you feel echoes of BMW around higher speed corners, but its shit at and heavy at low speed with oversteer. as soon as you start assaulting corners past 80KM/H transforms into a whole new car - light and nimble, limited lean and such easy to control RWD drifts at the limit. but how often can i do that without going to jail? the 3 series would have been a more enjoyable choice for me there is no doubt abou that. but my rare drivetrain makes this car a keeper regardless of the fact its a damn boat.. |

All 5-series I have driven felt like boats. E34,E39 and E61, getting worse for every generation.
The 3-series seems to go in the same direction so if you want a sporty BMW, buy a 1-series or a Z. Atm I have an E87 118d and E91 325i. I tend to drive the 1-series most of the time because it feels so much lighter and more fun to drive.

My Mother's e28 528e automatic sure was the "Ultimate Driving Machine".
You guys need to get over yourselves. It's the same complaints with literally every single new generation of BMW. Too big, too soft, not sporting, blah, blah, freaking blah. If the company still made nothing but brand-new 2002's, some of you would be happy as clams, but of course, BMW would have gone out of business 40 years ago. And fun though they are, by modern standards 2002's really kind of suck.

anyways, I think its best not to judge a vehicle by a task it was never engineered to do in the first place - it's just unfair to the g30. if you judge it by how it cruises on the street and how it feels around moderately relaxed corners, you would love it. but... different strokes for different folks right? |

There is the fact however that Alpina can get the G30 as their B5 to have a 0-60 of 3sec, I think, and a top end of 205mph so there's hope the M5 will be worth swapping into from this 550i when it's available. The B5 will not be available in the states though, which sucks.

Even the 3 series is a boat compared to what it used to be.
The 2 series or 1 is the only way to get some decent handling. |

there is little steering feel, but the chassis is communicative enough and capable for a car of this size. its handling is capable, but ponderous and not very direct. lets just end this thread? we all know that the newer 5 series models are after luxury sales, not to satisfy us enthusiasts. |

a RWD M550i with a set of great tires would be a god damn blast around high speed sweepers and highways.

if you manage to come across a RWD 5 series like I did, that is a big advantage over the competition right there. I wanted a light(er) and more nimble 3 series, but all I could find was fucking xdrive and turbos. so glad I went with RWD and N52. |

I can imagine it would be a bit of a handful in the snow because of all the torque though.. but it handled incredible compared to what I am used to in the 5er. |

I probably should have ended up going with an f30 n55 or even f10, but was scared away with the reliability issues. the N55 seems to be fairly reliable, but I wanted something naturally aspirated and super solid which is exactly what my N52 ended up being.
xDrive was completely 100% out of question for me. It was either RWD or something else all together and finding a RWD F10 or F30 here in canada is damn near impossible. the 2011 528i with the N52 was actually RWD only no xDrive option for that year and model which made my search a bit easier. |
