You Know You Are Old When.........
Please feel free to add to this, car related or not.
This is following on from a conversation between me, a couple of work colleagues and the work experience kid............... You remember owning cars which had 4 speed manual gearboxes You remember the days when you had to manually choke the car You have modified a car using a Weber carburetor You passed your driving test without having to take a theory test You Have no idea what a hazard perception test is You remember when xenons were cutting edge technology (and you wanted them so bad) You remember when rear passenger seatbelts were not required to be worn by law You remember when rear passenger seatbelts were optional extras You remember when ABS was an optional extra You remember the first time you tried deliberately to lock up a car with ABS and thought you had destroyed the brakes You remember not liking power steering the first time you drove a car with it because of lack of steering feel You have owned cars that ran on 4* and actually remember petrol stations with red pumps You remember the days cars actually used to come with ashtrays for cigarettes and the lighter socket actually used to have a lighter in there You remember manually winding up and down car windows You remember the days of no AC and having to wind down windows when it was hot You remember the first car you had with electric windows are wondered how you ever managed without them You remember car alarms like Moss and Cobra You remember when you used to be able to cut car keys at any shop that could cut keys You remember when cars did not come with safety systems like traction control You remember when diesel used to freeze below a certain temperature You remember having to make sure all car doors were locked because central locking was a very rare and expensive optional extra You remember when MOT's were written out by hand You remember the days where you could tell the police to "give me my producer and let me go" You remember when Red Bull first came out and was the only energy drink on the market, and you also remember that all they did was energy drinks back then |

My first job when leaving school was a pump attendant. The sign quoted it as £1.02 per GALLON.

Talking of 4 star ....
Here's an image from my late Father's garage (now run by my brother). spot the unregistered MK1 Escort, 5 star, tiger in your tank promotion and redex can for a little squirt before you were filled up (no self service then). D.

Sad to say, I remember when fuel increased from 24.5 pence (4 shillings and 11 pence) to 25.5 pence (5 shillings and a half pence) per gallon. If you searched you could get 4 gallons for £1.00.
Also remember when Duckhams 20/50 was the oil of choice and was changed every 3000 miles. Grease nipples also spring to mind, but then when didn't they? Cross ply tyres. Running a SAAB 93 Two stroke and thinking I was a rally driver. Happy days. |

How about :
When one of your mates got a car (Opel Manta) with fuel injection and you were SO jealous. Adjusting the ignition timing manually using the turn screw on the side of the distributor. Balancing twin carbs...every week because the balance never lasted. Driving a 3 speed manual (68 Mustang) before you'd passed your test. Changing brake shoes, front and rear. The list goes on

Owning a Jag Mk2 3.8S when 18 and petrol was 4 gallons a £1 and it needed to be at 10 to the gallon round town. Going out with a mate in it on the pull, stopping at bus stops and asking the local females if they wanted to get in and go for a drink, and they did:-)

Goodmans rear parcel shelf speakers!!! I remember getting our first colour TV, then an actual remote controlled one years later, then teletext. I also remember getting the slipper at school for talking in the swimming pool! Non PC times were great!

A few my boss threw at me just as I was leaving work today.....
Remember when you wanted to buy a car and you actually had to save up for it instead of being able to get finance. Rumbelows and Radio Rentals The days when cars like M3's were only within the reach of high earners, footballers and drug dealers. The moment BMW put out a press release telling the world they were going to manufacture an off road 4x4 and laughing at them saying "it will never catch on." |
