Will Downpipe Cause Drone at Highway Speeds?

Hey Guys,

I just picked up a 340i with MPPSK. Really impressed with the car overall, and loving every minute of it.

I would like to get a bit more aggressive sound out of it, while still having the option of quieter exhaust in the Comfort mode for long drives.

For those that have done it, is there a noticeable difference in additional noise / drone with a downpipe when cruising along on the highway in Comfort mode in the 8th gear?

I do take longer trips, and would hate having to be in lower gear to eliminate drone.

Interesting, I haven't thought about the resonator delete... seems like a pretty straight forward mod. Any downsides to that?

Ha, so was doing a bit of research and it looks like MPPSK exhaust already comes with a resonator delete as well as a midpipe. So much for that idea lol.

Looks like downpipe is the way to go for extra sound.

Shouldn't have any drone if you have the stock exhaust. Exhaust becomes deeper. A little louder but the biggest change is the deeper tone.

Get a proven brand (VRSF, VM or Evolution Racewerks) and you wont get any drone

Thanks, guys. I guess now I just have to decide if I'm OK voiding the warranty with the downpipe. I've read about removing JB4 for dealer visits - obviously not something one would do with a downpipe.

Called one of the local dealers, and they even advised against a cold air intake for the sake of ensuring warranty coverage if something happens with the powertrain.

I've yet to install mine, I'm waiting to hit 1500 miles to ensure I don't have a lemon. However, I've heard this body style is one of the easiest to replace downpipes on. An hour or less.

I have never heard of a dealer saying an air intake will void your warranty..

So, is there even a reason to uninstall / hide JB4 if you have a downpipe? Wouldn't the mod be pretty evident once they look the car over?

Most dealership do not care about your mods unless they are doing a warranty job related to it.
You can always call them and ask before bringing the car for service

Really opens up the car and allows the turbo to spool much quicker due to the increased exhaust flow.

You need a quieter exhaust setup then it will sound good.

An aftermarket catless downpipe is certainly
Better performing and better sounding then the stock one

To answer the thread question, I run ER dp, stock midpipe and AWE axelback and have absolutely 0 drone on the highway. 2900-3200ish rpm will drone but that is all.
