Part-Exchange VED

Hi All,

With the new (few years old now) VED system which is all online, who is responsible for alerting DVLA that the car has been passed on to the motor trade and for the VED payments no longer to be taken?

My experience with Audi was seamless and the salesman sorted it all on the spot but I am at loss with BMW as to who should notify DVLA especially as I do not have the V5 anymore as it was handed over along with the car.

If anyone is better informed than I, then please do let me know the process and where the responsibility lays. Thanks!

The responsibility lies directly with you. Dead easy, you go online and tell the DVLA that you are no longer the owner. You should also have been given the yellow section of the V5 from the dealer - it has the reference number you need printed on it.

That is the problem, I don't have any part of the V5 anymore...

If you don't have the V5 because you have given each part to the DVLA and the new owner/trader respectively then DVLA already know not to charge you for the VED and will process any refund that is due.

If you have lost or given away both parts of the V5 then you're screwed.

Do an online check to see if the vehicle is still taxed - maybe the dealer has informed them electronically

or

Get onto the dealer and ask him for the 12 digit ref number from the V5

or

From the DVLA website

If you don’t have a log book you must write to DVLA with the:

vehicle registration number
make and model
exact date of sale
name and address of the new keeper

DVLA
Swansea
SA99 1BD

The problem is, I don't have any part of it.. The person handling our delivery was new and this was her second delivery ever. She wasn't sure what to write on the V5 or anything and I believe it is somewhere here that a problem has occurred.

Put simply, I have no V5 paperwork and the dealership are none the wiser where the V5 is as the car has moved on to the central parent company now..
