Kuhmo Ecsta PS91

Anyone running these tires? They appear to be a pretty good value. I currently have hankook ventus v12 evos, but I haven't been able to find a comparison between the two.

I do some auto-x, but not that competitively, so I'm not planning on getting 200tw tires right now. Just want something that has decent grip.

I also don't want to spend the money on PSS right now, since they're almost $300 more than the Kuhmos.

Only thing I'm worried about is some people saying the Kuhmos flat spot over night, but that it works itself out within a few minutes of driving.

Definitely below average. https://www.tirerack.com/tires/tests...y.jsp?ttid=218

Even though they're only considered UHP, the Firestone firehawk indy 500 are extremely solid performers and very affordable. https://www.tirerack.com/tires/tests...y.jsp?ttid=217

I was considering the firehawks, but the Kuhmos have a lower tread rating than them. Dry performance is what I care most about, since this car is not my daily.

I had read the above review and based on it decided the Kuhmos are closest to my needs, with the PSS being the only one better in the test.

I wish there was a firehawk, PS91 and ventus evo2 comparison.

Although actually in a different tab of that test they have a firehawk and ps91 comparison. The firehawks are rated as having better grip, so maybe the tread wear is misleading.

Treadwear literally means almost nothing as it's set by the manufactures. The 200tw RE71R WAY outperforms any other 200tw tire. Similarly the 300tw PSS outperforms many lower TW tires as well. (e.g. ps91)

If you look at the charts the indy 500 pulled 0.05g more than the Kuhmo. (Different test days but that's actually pretty significant regardless)

Since it's not your daily I'd look at cheaper 200tw tires like the 595 rsrr, nexen sur4, or find some rs-3s.

Yea, I hadn't see the direct comparison between the PS91 and the firehawk until now. Now I'm back leaning towards the firehawk.

I talked to some guys at my local autox and they all seemed to say I'd lose a lot of grip on the 200tw since I don't have a garage and they'd be exposed to the cold.

Even though it's not my daily I do take some 500 mile+ road trips in the car, so tread life matters a little. Also I don't think hydroplaning resistance is great on most of the 200tw, which would be bad if I was on a long trip in the rain.

I'm thinking the firehawks are gonna be the way to go.

In fairness, that's the number with the biggest difference between them. If you look at all the numbers...

The Indy 500 has a slight advantage in dry and wet slalom times.

The PS91 has a very slight advantage in dry lap time and a bit larger advantage in wet lap time.

The PS91 has a small advantage in dry braking distance and larger advantage in wet braking distance.

The Indy 500 has an advantage in dry skidpad grip.

The PS91 has a very slight advantage in wet skidpad grip.

Slalom time - dry
PS91 - 5.00 sec
Indy 500 - 4.95 sec

Slalom time - wet
PS91 - 5.67 sec
Indy 500 - 5.65 sec

Lap time - dry
PS91 - 29.94 sec
Indy 500 - 30.02 sec

Lap time - wet
PS91 - 34.71 sec
Indy 500 - 35.45 sec

Stopping distance 50-0 mph - dry
PS91 - 78.70 ft
Indy 500 - 80.30 ft

Stopping distance 50-0 mph - wet
PS91 - 114.50 ft
Indy 500 - 121.80 ft

Average cornering force - dry
PS91 - 0.86 g
Indy 500 - 0.91 g

Average cornering force - wet
PS91 - 0.76 g
Indy 500 - 0.75 g

Given similar overall prices, which one you choose depends on your priorities.

The Indy 500 with the higher skidpad grip and better slalom times could very well be a better autocross tire.

The PS91 might be a better tire on bigger tracks since it could help gain time under braking. But it's hard to judge from this limited amount of information.

I have the PS91, because while I don't autocross, I do drive in the rain.

Do you get any of the flat spotting that people talk about with the PS91s?

I think I'm gonna go with the Firestones, since their consumer ratings are better across the board as well.

Hard to say about the flat spotting. When driving first thing in the morning I sometimes detect what might be a little bit of a wobble noise from the front of the car, but I have camber plates and poly lower control arm bushings so the front of my car tends to transmit more noise anyway. It generally hasn't been to the point where it's affected overall feel of there being like an unbalanced wheel.

I just picked them up for my E90 335i pre LCI, they are super sticky but am having major rubbing issues up front with a 245/35/19 lowered on Tein springs, pretty annoyed, trying to find a 225/35/19 to replace them now...
