Break-in Route SoCal->NorCal
Hey guys (and gals). So my M2 (LBB 6MT!) should be arriving end of the month in SoCal. I live in NorCal (was too hard to get an allocation around here). Initially I wanted to drive it up Highway 1 all the way, but now that there's no way through Big Sur, what's a good route any places to stop by/fun roads to drive bringing up a car? I figure I-5 is bad for breaking it in and I probably wouldn't want to do the NorCal/SoCal drive again in my life (or at least in this car) so might as well make the most of it. I don't mind taking my time, spending a weekend to do it, getting hotel(s), etc. Any recommendations?

Why is the 5 bad for breaking it in? long stretches, open road... not a lot of stop and go (at least not on a holiday weeknd). There are speed traps, but you won't be going fast breaking it in.. only part is when it stinks near the slaughterhouses
i'd say stop by Santa Barbara, especially if you take the 101 down. BTW: SB has traffic before and and the end of weekends (friday and sunday afternoon/evening). |

Thought all manufacturers say break-in you should try to avoid prolonged highway speeds as you need to vary the load? I suppose I could row the gears every other mile...

Just did the drive, go up the coast then cut into SLO, stay the night, cruise the 101 and heads towards monterey and up the coast to where you're going.

Bumping this. Still a ways away from when I pick up my M2 but wanted to hear more feedback for a recommended route along highway 101 or highway 1. Also which seem to have better road conditions. I typically take H5 when I go to SoCal and back but want to drive along the coast this time.

You're right. I just checked and only partial areas of highway 1 has reopened with still a good amount of it closed off. I'm out the loop

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news - it would have been a beautiful drive. But at least that makes your route planning easier?

I get my car end of September and have a wedding in Santa Barbara. Unfortunately it's only 300 miles round trip. So not going to be fully breaking in the car.
Hope I'm not thread jacking OP.... Just wondering if my SoCal'ers think it's worth doubling my trip on the way there and forcing myself to stay on PCH/1 the entire way. (from 2 hours to 4 hours). I know there are plenty of unexciting parts. On the way back I'd do 405/101. |

When I picked up my M2 (6speed) from Camarillo last April, my plan was to drive along the coast (to Santa Barbara and SLO) and then follow the detour to Nor Cal.
However, the plan changed immediately enroute to Santa Barbara. My legs got tired (oh the SoCal traffic). So I drove back to Burbank and took highway 5. I vary the speed between 75-80, and occasional burst to 100. It's not bad. Note: the car will be covered with dead insects after your trip. Make sure to cover the front end and side mirrors with vinyl tape or plastic wrap before you embark. Since my car is white, I used 2 rolls of white 2" vinyl tape from amazon ($14).

I always typically take H5 going to and from to SoCal. I'm going to buy some tracktape or something similar to wrap the front end with before heading back up. |
