Thumbs down Lazy Mercedes Design!

Here's the new E Class coupe, oh hang on it's the C Class Coupe, or is it the Renault Laguna Coupe again?!

The copy and paste function is obviously Mercedes' favourite design tool!

S Class Coupe looks the same as well.

And C63 AMG Coupe also looks very similar.

Yeah it is awful if you pay £100K+ for an S Class Coupe and it looks like a £30k c class lol.

But, we also have to wait for 8 Series Coupe and see how it's design is.

I still think it's a great looking car, and I don't think anyone will confuse it for a Laguna coupe.
The different size cookie-cutter design issue is as big with the 3,5,7 series for BMW as it was in the 80s.

What a dire design the new E-class coupe is, what happened with the doors - they look so slab-sided. The C is dreadful too from so many angles.

SUVs aside, I really don't get any of the Mercedes range. Their stylists seem wilfully unable to produce a design with any grace or decent proportion. The success of the mess that is the A-class and CLA seemingly puts me in the minority though!

I think the Mercedes philosophy is supposed to be the other way around. For £30k you get a car that looks like a £100k S Class. They said it was back to their 80's design language where all the cars were styled similarly.

I personally don't always like it. Audi have been doing it for years, Jaguar started recently with the XE and XF openly stating that's what they were doing. And look at the new 5 and 7 series.

I think the A-class is ok, but agree about the CLA. OF the SUVs the the GLC is a very handsome car to my eyes but the GLE is very clunky looking and not a patch on the X5.

I think the C class is a nice coherent design, but a bit bland when scaled up to the E-class, but I think the same about the 5 series.

I think their coupes look great though, and the AMG-GT is stunning.

This ^^

One of my neighbours has just got a new C class and it's a real shocker in the looks department - not to mention, the noise from under the bonnet at startup, which is agricultural

No doubt it's a 4 pot diesel? In which case it surely can't be much worse than the 320?

At least BMW give you a choice to have a 6 cylinder diesel.

BMW excellence in engines and drivetrain is without doubt, be that petrol, diesel or electric. But the 320d sounds like a bucket of bolts if we are going to compare like for like. If we are going down that route, you could say at least Mercedes give you the option of a V8 in the C-class.

Don't think that's really a fair comparison. The 3.0 diesel was part of their mainstream offering, as is the 330d. Both companies still have performance divisions, they just choose different ways to deliver the power.

That was my point. Why throw in irrelevances when the point was all 4 pot diesels sound shite?
Even more bizarre that we got on to this when the actual discussion was Mercedes design!

As I said, BMW definitely lead the way on drivetrains, but let's not pretend their like for like engine is much better for NVH when it comes to the 320d.

I wasn't pretending that. But if you don't like a rough 2.0 diesel at BMW and Audi you have a reasonable choice that doesn't cost the earth. That might seem irrelevant to you, but if I was making a car choice, that knowledge would be important.

I am on a Jaguar forum and the traditional customers are leaving that brand (including me, I intended to go back when the new XF came out) because they've all but removed the option of a 3.0 diesel, they've made it only available as an expensive performance option.

To me car design and engine choice go hand in hand, I always consider both when buying.

I don't like the c-class coupe/saloon or estate or the e-class saloon, but I really like the new e-class coupe.

Everything that is wrong with the c-class coupe design proportions is addressed by the wider and longer platform that the e-class sits on.

It's the only Mercedes I'd buy.

These threads pop up quite often, "lazy [insert Audi/Merc/BMW] design they all look the same"

They have always looked the same.

They have always followed a Russian doll approach with just a few exceptions over the years and those exceptions only serve to give authority to the rule that they always look the same.

Here are some BMWs they made earlier all looking the same.

And some more lazy design from Mercedes. (look at the e-class and the 190e photocopier set to 20% reduction)

Exactly, we really expect it if we are honest. Design 'language' is bound to be the same at any given period, then they move a bit and repeat the 'new' theme. When there is deviation there is the usual accusation, they are copying, or looking like some other brand.

Exactly, and don't forget we also bitch when they do something different e.g. X6, 2 active tourer, etc.
