What the actual f...?

Earlier today I was on a roundabout under the A27, going straight on. A man emerging on to the roundabout from my left in a grey Alfa didn't bother to look and just pulled out in front of me forcing me to brake and swerve to the right to avoid a collision. I saw exactly what he looked like - old boy, grey hair, grey beard, purple jumper. I hit the horn to let him know I was there so, what did he do? He brake checked me (one of the most irresponsible moves you can pull on a public road!). Then he did it again. He was clearly in the wrong but took exception to someone hooting at him for it. I did nothing except keep my distance and a half mile up the road I pulled into a supermarket car park to go use the ATM.

As I was returning to my car a few minutes later I saw a man walking towards my car. Grey hair, grey beard, purple jumper and believe it or not, a large screwdriver in his left hand. I knew who he was straight away, but I don't think he knew me as he slowed but kept walking towards my car. He then stopped a couple of feet away from the passenger side of my car and looked around... then saw me looking straight at him. It was at that point I said to him "Clear off or you'll be sorry" (having no idea what I'd have done!). He didn't say a word, but turned and walked away across the car park and I then saw his Alfa parked about 75yds away from mine.

I mean what the f... was he thinking?!!! I reckon he must be seriously unhinged and shouldn't be mixing with the public. But, what can you do? Had I called the old bill it would have been a waste of their time and mine - all circumstantial. I left, adrenaline going, and just counting myself lucky that I returned to my car as quickly as I did. He'd obviously seen me pull in to the car park, had doubled back and then looked for my car to exact some sort of revenge. For what...?

There are some serious f**kwits out there guys!

That is mental.

I've had it on a few occasions where someone has cut me up on a roundabout (the standard two lanes but car in the left lane goes straight across the right lane) and I've given them the horn to let them know I'm there, only to have them swear at me.

It's a shame you weren't able to whip out your phone and video him, screwdriver in hand, together with pictures of his car. Even better would have been if you'd had dashcam footage of the original incident.

I'm sure the police wouldn't have been interested, but the internet dishes out its own form of justice when presented with video evidence.

There are indeed.

Once upon a time they would either be teenagers or in their early 20's.

These days they come in all shapes, sizes and ages.

Unfortunately alot of people who suffer road rage - and not necessarily when they are the wronged party. Its why I rarely react to mistakes made by others as you dont know what the reaction will be. In fact I always say that if you have time to go for the horn you werent really struggling to miss them so its more a sign of anger than warning!

Scary. The other factor that worries me is that lots of people don't give two shits about their vehicles, and will happily risk a bump or a scrape to get one over on you (or correctly gamble that you care more about your car than they do about theirs).

I learnt my lesson a few years ago, a bloke cut me up on a roundabout and I just gave the hands in air and fingers, drove off not thinking about it.

About 5 mins later out of town I notice this bloke behind me, so I turned at a junction, bit of a double back, nope still behind me, so drove to my mates - 30 miles away, this bloke followed me for about 28, turned off when I drove in to a rather shady area.

However, 30 miles is seriously deranged, I always remember Kenneth Noye and think it's just not worth it.

OMG if any of us was in the wrong mood that could have very very bad quickly. I think you showed a lot of restraint. I'd have been tempted to just have a pop!!

Not good! He is clearly not a full shilling.

But I don't blast my horn at other peoples mistakes, I did once and got followed, he was trying to go round me to block me off, so I drove to a mates factory got on the phone and said get the lads outside with some bats....

Pulled up at the factory they were waiting outside, this guy jumped out of his car didn't give a fuck about the factory lads with bars in their hands, he was the nastiest piece of work I'd ever seen and was in a rage.

Thankfully I managed to talk him down a bit move out of range and he backed down when they started moving towards him and showed him they too meant business, otherwise I'd have been kicked to shit!

But from that day on I just let it go.

I don't really get annoyed at people in the roads these days for this very reason - you never know who you are actually dealing with

Alternatively just make sure you carry a bigger screwdriver...

Well that's a new one. Clearly a twat and a vengeful old git as well. That said, there's just the possibility that he didn't see you coming (complete lack of attention) and jumped to the conclusion, oblivious to his own ineptitude, that you were driving aggressively and needed a lesson.

Anyway, you could have given him the cool confident Archie response :

I'd say report it. Especially if the supermarket carry cctv. One of the plods may be able to confirm but I'm pretty sure if he had a screwdriver in his hand as a weapon, they'd take action whether you pressed a charge or not. If this loony does it to a less capable motorist...
