All in one PC
I'd like a new piece of tech, I really like the idea of an all in PC with a 27" screen I'm thinking it would make the internet come alive and I'd be able to turn the office into a snug at night so I could have somewhere to watch what I want on Netflix etc, rather than endless soaps.
I've been looking at a Lenovo IdeaCentre AIO 910 27" Touchscreen. Anyone have one of these large screened all in ones? Any good?

Which give the Lenovo Ideacentre 510 (intel) a 77% score making it a best buy beating the imacs. Only things that get higher scores are a Mac mini and an HP Pavilion wave.
Should I buy it? Yes. It's not as cheap as the AMD version, but you're getting a faster computer and overall a better experience with this model. It packs enough power for the average daily user, and the screen and speakers are refreshingly competent, compared with some other models that pass through our test lab. Typical price £700.00 The 910 doesn't do well scoring only 59% Should I buy it? No. While it has plenty of power, the screen is a disappointment, and it feels like a real compromise, especially for the price. There are better options out there, like the Dell XPS 27, if you're after a big display. While it may not be quite as visually appealing as the Lenovo, it does have an i7 core processor, and a sharp, vibrant display. Typical price £1,000.00 Speedy and enough power for most tasks Screen is a letdown |

I am currently looking for very same thing, and was going to get the Lenovo 510s. Things that put me off were lack of SSD (I would put one in anyway), but also some reviews said the chip was the mobile version of the i5 so not as powerful.
Anyway, stumbled on this latest model HP http://store.hp.com/UKStore/Merch/Pr...pt=ABU&sel=DTP It's a decent looking machine, latest 7th gen intel chip and SSD built in so I suspect pretty fast. I may end up going for the 24" version but specs look very good. Could not find any reviews as it's just been released. I did stumble on a 7% discount code floating around the net, can't find it now! |

I want the best and biggest screen I can get, now I won't be doing anything taxing on the machine just multi media internet stuff.
(although perhaps that is taxing for the CPU) We distribute for everyone bar HP and Apple but often our cost is higher than the retailers net cost price once SOAs and rebates are taken into account so will probably end up buying from retail. Would you say SSD is must? Same for i7? I understand that not all processors are made equal and that it goes beyond the "I" rating in terms of performance, my laptop is i7 and has SSD but it's 3-4 years old and not that quick at all. Poor review on the 910 screen so that's off the list.

short answer, no
at 27" 1080p is a poor resolution, fine for watching at a distance e.g. sofa or from bed but really you want 2.7k or 4K beyond 24" secondly the main problem with the AIO form factor is either the screen gets out of date (1080p) or the internals do at which point you have to replace both. personally I don't see the point of touch screen AIO, a monitor should be arms length away from you e.g. you should JUST be able to touch it, therefore if it's touch screen then it's pointless, mounted flush in a table surface and it's a different ball game. depending on your use case there's several both (probably better options) something like the intel NUCs or even the HDMI stick PCs that fit straight into the monitor. either way I'd avoid that lenovo |

Yeah lovely but too rich for me, cheapest one is £1749 with the 5k screen what happens if you're internet is only 5-8mb does it all go wrong if it can't stream the heavy file?
Sorry for all the stupid questions, but I guess if you're going to pay £1000 odd you might as well go the whole hog, I have friends with the 27" imac and they swear by it.

The original iMac 27" was much less than 4K. The 21" versions are available with a 4K display now.

Only issue with all-in-ones is they are hard to upgrade or service in the future. My recommendation is a Intel NUC and hide it behind a good screen. Plenty of fantastic screens around.
At least in the future you can pick and choose upgrades much easier.

Most people, me included, I suspect don't want to upgrade. They just want to a buy a PC and leave it at that. An AIO works perfectly well for that, is space efficient etc.

I was pretty convinced that a Mac would be my next desktop (not before they refresh it), but this looks a good option.

Personally, I took the budget I had for an iMac and built a proper miniITX gaming rig and got a decent monitor setup. Not as compact or pretty to lok at, but some of the miniITX cases are wonderful these days and can accommodate some serious GPUs, SSDs, HDDs, water cooling etc.
Well worth the time and effort to learn to build! |

Ok, so I'm going to suggest something that would do what you want, and wouldn't cost the earth.
Raspberry Pi running Kodi. Box is tiny, and can easily be hid behind, or mounted to the back of a TV. Will turn whatever TV/monitor you already have into a media centre to watch netflix, etc. Alternatively you could get yourself a new TV/Monitor and it'd still cost less than anything else. You can control remotely using phone or tablet app. Would probably cost you £80 all in (without monitor, of course) Will happily play 1080p/blueray MKV's/AVI's without issue. If you like gadgets and enjoy tinkering around, it should be right up your street. Last edited by Russbmw; 03-20-2017 at 08:29 AM.. |
