I'm up at my local car wash...

Getting my wife's fiesta cleaned. Someone's just turned up to get their 17 plate boxster washed.

I can't ever imagine liking cars enough to want to spend the cash on a boxster, and then not clean it and care for it myself.

Either I don't have enough money, or I care about my car too much!

I guess this is actually probably normal as compared to the approach most take on here.

To some people it's just a lump of metal.

To most people I'm sure.

I guess that's the case even for Porsche customers, 'enthusiasts' represent a v small proportion of owners.

It's only a boxter, I'd be inclined to have words with the owner if it was a 911!

Only a boxster, but still what? £45k?

I was going to say it's a car but actually it's more a badge and a symbol. Keep it looking clean so people are more impressed but it's not about real care....

I am at the other end, it's a car and I get it cleaned to keep it legal and my clothes clean! Not everyone who likes cars likes cleaning them!

You should see the car washes in Palm Beach, Florida.. Used to run my E92 through (post 100k miles) and I'd see Rolls and Bentley's go through like they were Honda's, even saw a 458 one day.

A part of me cringes, but at the same time I love it. People daily these things because they have the means to do so, its actually kind of great to see the cars getting used as opposed to posing in front of the camera or locked away in some guys compound.

The hand car wash I go to always has cars like Ferrari's, brand new porsches, mustangs, tesla's etc. being washed there, most people just aren't that anal about their paintwork.

It's interesting because until I started posting on here ahead of getting my F30 I wasn't concerned either. It was only once I saw a few bits on here about the optimal way to wash a car to avoid swirls that I was even aware of it.

I use a hand car wash, but specifically one that I know to have good standards. They're not all bad.

And for £12 it does rather make me happier than having soggy feet and having to talk to the neighbours.

Ought to be good for 12 quid! I'd definitely be washing my own. All hand car washes round here are a fiver. Harder choice. I usually wash myself for 6 months or so when I get a new car, then give in.

Most people don't actually understand the damage that can be done by dirty sponges etc either

That's inside and out. I may be lucky, but the place I use are very good and spend about 30/40 minutes per car, even down to things like adjusting the steering wheel column so they can collect dust behind it.

My Skoda Citigo is not worth much relative to most F30s, never mind Porsches, but I still wouldn't let anyone else clean it.

I have always used the one at the jet garage at top of Sheffield road. Thought they were good but the swirls on the black mini we had would suggest otherwise.

Solution - don't buy a dark colour 😉

Too late......

Alternative solution, don't look at car too closely.

i wasnt - it stood out from miles away in the sun!

Solution 2 - drive it dirty (as seems to be the current approach with silver Volvo), once every 2000 miles seems plenty!

I was walking round the borough of Kensington and Chelsea with my Sister yesterday. I lost count of the 66 and 17 plated RR, Porsche's and other nice motors with kerbed to buggery wheels.

I don't trust hand car washes, but I frequently run mine through the local IMO. Does a good enough job and tbh the paint is pretty swirl free for a two and a half year old car.

The tracks on my local IMO damaged a tyre on my 730 five years ago. And at the far end it nearly took my side mirror off.
Never again..
