What is more important to you, car or house?
A conversation I was having with my brother at the weekend, both of us are very much into cars, him more so than me, he has a very nice small fleet but we both agreed that we have both made sacrifices in terms of climbing the car ladder in favour of climbing the property ladder.
I also know people who have very nice fleets and relatively modest houses compared to their cars. Each to their own of course. |

House over car. The reality is i wouldn't over stretch any one thing. Having too big a mortgage takes away flexibility, whereas you can always get rid of a car if times got tough.
But my priorities through life have probably been: House Pension Car Buying stuff- tech, clothes, gadgets etc... Socialising Holidays Over last few years I'd say that holidays have gone up significantly and buying stuff dropped to the bottom.

Definitely house. Last year we were able to buy what is realistically our dream house. On the edge of tiny village, over looking fields and we get more horses down the lane than cars. And after being on a modern estate with parking problems, we have a driveway big enough for 4 cars! (Anyone who has ever come home from work to find they can't park outside their own house will appreciate how valuable that is!) And surrounded by fields with public footpaths and bridle paths to walk the dogs. It's further for me from work but it's absolutely worth it.
I guess this ties in with the holidays post. This is what we could afford but still be able to do all the nice things in life. We could have borrowed more and something 'bigger and better' but this is our little piece of England and we love it. |

House for me but mainly because I treat it as part of my pension - a way of living nicely and saving for rainy day / the kids. Plan now is to have a 20% stake in one each for the kids (at south east and London prices!), one small one for me and the rental place, which I may convert to holiday cottage / for holiday let at a later stage. Ticks all boxes I reckon.....
And I drive a 6 year old Volvo currently so fairly obvious.... |

I managed to have both. Although neither purchase was heinously expensive. But I'm proud to have had the ability to purchase my car(s) and a house on my own. It's the culmination of years of hard working while everyone else went to uni for a booze up. Still got my degree through work too.
As and when I have to do it again, I'll always sell cars to fund houses. My house has gained half of what I put in as a deposit in value in 18 months. My cars have all lost money. When I can afford to throw it away, I'll be able to choose the cars! |

Our house, no discussion - we've got a smallholding with 62 acres.
Nothing to compare with being outside doing work, planting trees, hedgerow works, etc on your own property. I'll hopefully live long enough to see a fair few of the trees in maturity. There's a saying : the best time to plant a tree was 20 years ago. The second best time is today. In the last 7 years that we've lived here I've planted 100 trees each year. Lovely looking place there TouringPleb |

Definitely house! I could quite easily stop over paying the mortgage and get into an M3 or better but that will come once i own my house out right. Also have a number of rental properties being paid off by someone else (rental income) which will be my pension pot (i also pay into a pension).
Can sleep easy at night knowing that cutting back at the moment means 5 -10 years time i will be set and kids will be sitting on decent sized inheritance!! |

Over the years I've been fortunate enough, or have orchestrated, to have received significant funds : bonuses, voluntary redundancy with a new role already lined-up, etc. At the time I seriously considered buying a TVR, almost bought a 911, etc, but instead chose to invest the money in bricks and mortar : moving up the ladder and invested in extending. I don't have a property portfolio, just a good sized house in a nice area with plenty of room for the family.
Total financial independence, i.e. zero debt, gives me peace of mind, security, and a completely different sense of satisfaction compared to driving a sports car. For now I'll settle for a reasonably fast, and practical car, as a compromise. House wins.

house, then car. But it depends on what you mean by sacrificing houses for cars. If I spent less on a car could I buy a more expensive house - yes, do I want to - no. This is because we have a family home that we all love regardless of how much it cost, and cars can be moved on if finances dictated with no real impact, and I also see my car as a hobby and am willing to spend more of my income on it.
