How much do folk spend on holidays each year?
Just curious... we (me and wife, no kids) save about £500 per month for our holidays each month but having a had a few long haul trips in last couple of years it's no longer enough.
Hard to know what's typical for folk as it's such a discretionary decision. I've always thought cars are more important, but as my salary has gone up over the years I realise I've not spent much more on cars, but rather upped holiday spending, and savings. I know some colleagues just base it on what their annual bonus is, but that seems too variable to me.

It really varies. Last year we took a great trip to the USA, total cost for the 2 of us was about £5k.
This year we've not got anything planned apart from a few weekends away for various half marathons - which involves the entry fees and a travelodge or premier inn ! |

I've just had my credit card bill from our Iceland trip last month, I cried!
We always have a few Berlin trips each year which we pay for with air miles (I have so many it's stupid not to). All our European trips are funded with air miles now (use them or lose them). I would say I (try to) put away about £750-£1000 each month for holidays and it covers the long haul trips for both of us. I tend not to buy crap I don't need anymore, the trips are a well earned break for us both and that's what I splurge on (I sound old!!). |

We moved to the country and for quite a few years were happy to stop at home as it such a relaxing and perfect place to be, we also spent the holiday money on the house.
Now the house is done we have holidays again. Last year a villa in Spain £2K for 2 weeks plus food, drinks etc. We also have long weekends at John Lewis properties as my wife works for them, Brownsea Island, Leckford etc. Great value and superb locations. We are quite careful but if we fancy somewhere then we do it in style. Bora Bora for 2 weeks was not cheap. Really like being at home and having horses and a dog can be tying |

Intersting question. Similar spend on holidays over the year, to the monthlies on the cars, and to what I put into my pensions. Then there's very little left over for Savings. Priorities slightly misaligned me thinks.

I don't save that much each month, all goes to pension, but I'm likely to hit lifetime allowance at current rate so switching to more in to ISAS. But always out more in pension than cars, and always way less on holidays.... going to alter that I think. When we've done holidays properly without scrimping we've always enjoyed them much much more.

We do love time at home and not really massively social, but seeing a new place, having a change of scene and not being tempted by chores around the home gives me a lot of renewed energy.

But do it right and then you can do both! Half the justification for the Boxster was as a holiday car as we missed our Z4, and the European road trips we had in it.

It varies year to year but generally I don't worry about the cost of the holiday, the cost of non-billable days adds up to far more.

Depends on what else is on the shopping list, but roughly speaking (also 2 adults no kids):
Fortnight on the beach in Greece £2-3k Three week driving holiday in Europe £5-6k Week on a nice boat £10-12k We tend to do the first one a lot, the second quite a bit and the third only rarely (every 3 or 4 years). My mate has three kids and his wife's a school teacher. They generally manage a week on the beach in August for about £4k so I don't feel too bad. The post-Brexit exchange rate is going to add about 20% this year though. Last edited by MrChumley; 03-13-2017 at 06:33 PM.. |

Varies a lot from year to year depending on where we are going.
Like to go somewhere a bit more exotic as I believe it is important to see the world so tend not to do the get drunk lounge on the beach all day long type holidays. For a while we had to do local trips due to the Mrs having spinal surgery and so unable to travel so spent about £6k or so. When things were back to normal we've spent circa £10+ for the four of us. This year we can go outside school holidays and am amazed at the cost difference - £7 k all inclusive in Aruba. On an aside can't understand folks who go on holiday and don't/won't visit outstanding archaeological/ natural wonders.

For the last decade or so we've spent around 10k a year on holidays. This is the first year where we don't have intention to book anything. Mixture of me spending every hour trying to grow the business and also a lot of dosh on our new house.
If we could turn back time, we'd have practically lived on holiday before our daughter was born. |

I know a few folks in this space and 25k per holiday is very common in those circles. Different world. All relative. To them 25k is like 2.5k for rest of us |

Our current budget it £7k but it's not enough if you want to ski once a year, then have a decent summer break, and then go away for a couple of long weekends.
