VTT Tech: The 600 WHP N54

Hey guys,

I wrote an article about how to get 600 whp out of your N54 powered BMW. It's not a DIY but goes over the basics of what it takes to get there -I hope some of you find it useful. Screenshots and .pdf attached.

Also -there are MANY ways to do this, and plenty of good quality parts out there -not everything that's good (even stuff we like!) got mentioned. If you have questions, just ask, we're always glad to help.

Fantastic writeup, Chris!

I'm curious about why the N20 map sensor is used in lieu of the factory N54 sensor. Is it a higher bar capability?

Chris, this is a great writeup. So much great information laid out in an easy to understand format, consolidated into one location.

awesome post.

Quick questions for auto trans you recommend fresh fluid. I'm at 60k bmw won't do a flush. I'm not sure a flush would be wise at 60k either would a drain and fill be a better options?

Thanks

would there be a significant difference in performance between the GC's and GC lites if running 93 only?

I've been trying to hammer these points on the sidelines and FINALLY we have a realistic post with realistic ideals

Even without scaling boost to get beyond 22 PSI it's still crazy fast. There are plenty of cars out there whom are content with 21-22 PSI on upgraded turbos keeping everything realistic to the DME with true load and they are insanely quick.

Not to mention how many people still think 21 PSI on stock turbos is the same as 21 PSI on upgraded turbos. We need a post on something like this to break it down also clearing up such misconceptions

Good write up Chris

You nailed it; the OEM is 2.5 bar, the N20 is 3.5 bar. It allows boosting beyond the ~22 psi mark (provided the right software is used).

Haha! We'll keep that in mind. There are several other articles in process (it's a slow process for me) but I'll add that to the list of considerations.

I'm not a transmission expert, but people have done flushes just fine on these transmissions for a long time. If you're concerned about stirring up sediment/breaking loose things you don't want circulating through, a drain and fill works well to exchange most of the fluid. I know a few guys that did a couple drain and fill iterations within a short period of time to come as close as a flush as they could without any worries... I drive a 6MT, drain, re-fill, and keep grinding 2nd gear....

Lites will outspool and have lower lag. That is NOT to suggest the GC's have a lot of lag -they don't; they're very responsive, but the lites are just stupid responsive. On 93 we've had a couple of customers exceed the 500 whp mark fairly easily with lites (with some revs left in the RPM band too). The GC's will move more air and will still put more power down. We did 560 or so on the GC's on 93 octane... but we've learned a few things so may be able to exceed that now. Shoot me an email with your goals and current parts list and I'll help you sort through the differences if you'd like.
