Recommendations for insurance after theft?

So after my F30 was nicked last year, surprise surprise, my renewal came through this morning and it has trebled! With eSure at the moment.

Any recommendations from you peeps who to try? I expected it to go up but maybe not 3 times as much.

I'd try comparethemarket and confused.com, maybe followed by Direct Line.

Virtually impossible to recommend an insurer as the quotes are so dependent on issues particular to you.

At the moment I seem to alternate annually between Admiral and Direct Line cos they always give a new customer discount, but never seem interested in keeping me for a second year.

OK thanks thought as much.

Churchill and Privilege seem the best quotes from the comparison sites. Never used either of them to be honest.

You're welcome.

I was with Churchill a few years ago. Seemed OK but I didn't have to claim so you never know.

I'm pretty happy with Admiral as (a) they're cheapest (b) they were very helpful with a no-fault incident and (c) they don't charge extra for European cover.

M&S for me. Been with eSure last 3 years as they always came out cheapest. They increased my premium by about 50% this year so M&S this year.

Best thing to do is to look at all the main comparison sites (Compare the market, confused, moneysupermarket) and also those that are direct to customer only (Direct Line, Aviva I think and there are a couple of others).

I used to keep a spreadsheet so I would remember who to check with every year but lost it!

Being on this forum I'd also be mindful that some insurers will charge you over and above the increase in premium for changes to your car if you do any mods.

Direct Line so far the best, nearly half the price of eSure! Never used them before as could never be bothered to fill out a quote form just for one quote.

Maybe get what you consider to be the best quote, then phone them and try to negotiate it lower? Worth a try for the time/cost of a phone call.

My daughter was with Diamond last year and the renewal was £1350. By the time the phone call had finished we were at £950.

I nearly went with Direct Line last time as they came out cheapest. Checking with them though, they would NOT authorise a genuine windscreen in the event you needed replacement. All they would offer is £120 towards you going your own way with it. Given you have £100 excess with them then it's pretty useless cover if you want/need a genuine screen.

This was last August so worth checking the small print...

I went with Admiral in the end (£30 more per year) and when my screen got cracked in December, no issues at all getting genuine glass. Worth considering.....

Thanks for that! Just checked and all the small print says is:

What is covered
We will pay to:
• replace or repair broken glass in the windscreen, sunroof or windows of
your car, and repair any scratching to the bodywork caused by the broken glass, as long as there has not been any other loss or damage to your car; or
• replace the roof and rear windscreen assembly together if your car is tted with a folding roof and it is more cost-e ective than replacing the glass alone.
Claims under this section will not a ect your no claim discount. The most we will pay
We will not pay more than the market value of your car at the time of the loss (less any excess that may apply).

What is not covered We will not cover:
• the excess shown in the schedule; or
• any amount greater than the limit shown in the schedule if you do not use an approved windscreen supplier.

Direct Line and Admiral the cheapest for you.

I suspect we have much in common!

I'm with Direct Line, had a fault claim against me last year (only my car damaged, hit an item in the road that had fallen off a truck previously and couldn't be avoided) and they've been great. Not sure about the windscreen but they let me get my F10 repaired at my local BMW dealer rather than their approved repairers, had a loan car etc and their customer services are based in the UK and have always been easy to deal with.

Thanks chaps. Direct Line look the best bet.

To be honest eSure where great with my claim. UK call centre, everyone was very sympathetic, friendly and prompt. It's only because they are now approaching twice the price of DL that I am thinking of jumping ship.

I know mate - I read that too but when I phoned them and asked the specific question, they said they wouldn't approve manufacturer glass. It would be OEM.

I "think" from memory the PCP insists on genuine glass but not sure if/how they would check if you return it.

Interesting. I phoned Admiral (Autoglass) about this as there's a borderline chip on my windscreen. As it's too small to repair they said they'd replace it with a BMW HUD-compatible screen (apparently they're different) if I wanted one.

I think I might just leave it though and hope the collection guys don't notice.

Did you have protected NCB?

I wrote a car off completely in 2010 (£18k pay-out) and while my premium did increase the following year, it was only by about 50% or so and rapidly dropped away again. That was with protected NCB though.

Yeah, it doesn't always mean much. 60% of triple the premium is still three times the 60% you paid before.
