Oil in my water reservoir...

Just noticed anti-freeze dripping on the ground when I shut my car off. And then when filling the water reservoir I saw oil in the water. A cracked block or? Thank You! Bill

Thank You FCobra94! So a bad gasket can cause oil to to get into the anti-freeze fill tank? I'll go take a look but what gasket is it? Thanks! Bill

yeah on the oil filter housing both ports are inches away from each other and when the gasket wears outs they sip into each other.

don't forget an oil change just in case and coolant flush if it looks extremely contaminated.

Thank You! Ok, that makes sense! Wasn't sure how one mixed with the other. You know that gasket was leaking a year ago & I had it replaced along with a water pump & all the hoses. How did it start leaking again so soon? I will change the oil & flush the coolant system also... Bill

I took it to a BMW mechanic (independent shop, not dealer) & he quoted me $1000-1100 to fix it. This is for replacing the gasket (said he had to take off alternator, serpentine belt & maybe manifold), getting the oil out of the coolant system (said he might have to take the radiator out), oil change, new coolant (obviously) & 1 new hose. Is this reasonable? I live in Southern California so prices are probably high... Thanks! Bill

No need to touch serpentine belt or alternator, only intake manifold. Good luck!

It's not a bad DIY if you're mechanically inclined.

Thank You totti84 & Chris... So only the manifold & belt need to come of. Hmm, so I wonder why he said "the alternator & belt need to come off & MAYBE the manifold? He's never worked on my car before but he works on a friends BMW. Chris, I would have except for the oil in the water problem. I didn't feel confident in doing that. Plus I have 3 cars & there's something wrong with all of them so I have a rental. I need to get something running! Plus it's been raining & I don't have a garage at the moment. Thanks! Bill

No belts need to be touched at all! Only the manifold is a must for clearance

Thank You totti84 & F22_Raptor! So he's ripping me off. I tried going online to check Clintons Auto Repair Manual but the library site's down & the local library doesn't have it in stock. That would give me something to bring up to him when I pick up the car. I'm sort of between a rock & a hard place. Had the car towed there cuz I was advised not to drive it. And before he even talked to me he replaced a hose that was leaking (he had the wrong phone number for me. Or so he said). Guess I won't be thanking my friend who recommended him Lol... Think I'll start a new thread & see if anyone has easy access to a Clinton's manual... Thanks again! Bill

I think the going rate for the OFHG labor is upwards of 400-600 alone. The dealer would probably charge nearly 2x that.

Best bet is to call the dealer and get their rate, then you know where you stand. Keeping in mind they would be insanely over-priced

Just did this job... it's not bad but for breaking the damned hose connector toward the thermostat. What a bugger to route.

That said, I can't imagine why you would not flush coolant while doing this one.

Belt and alternator stay put! Engine cover, air box, throttle body and air intake are moved out of the way...

Thank You Jeff & jwebb335xi! Jeff, good idea I'll call the dealer to get an idea. But 400-600 gives me a good idea. I'm thinking the labor on the gasket replacement was in the 500+ bracket. jwebb, one of the things in his quote was removing all the oil from the coolant system so he'd have to replace coolant. When I stopped by there yesterday he already had the engine cover off & the air box is already out of the way cuz I have a CAI. In fact he said, "this is going to cost you cuz you need a factory air cleaner set up on it". LOL, I said "don't worry, I'll be ok with what I have" lol... Although they are filthy & he said he didn't want to clean them... I finally got into the library web site & into the Chiton's repair manual but couldn't find the gasket replacement... Thanks Again! Bill

Ummm, hell no this guy's trying to rob you.

You can search on here for ofhg diy, or oil filter housing gasket diy for details about the job.

You need to replace the ofhg, the oil thermostat gasket, and the two oil line orings that attach to the thermostat housing. Normally you will have to top off the coolant and maybe oil just a bit. This job should take an experienced professional 2-3 hours of labor. Parts are less than $30 bucks.

If you choose to do an oil change at the same time, add that to your cost above - not a bad idea.

Also, if you choose to drain and refill coolant, add that as well. draining coolant requires removing intercooler to access the plug under the radiator. again this can be done by a professional within less than an hour, plus cost of coolant.

I think he's just trying to scare you by removing radiator and all that stuff. Unless you coolant is turning brown from oil, I don't see the need. Also, you'll be replacing the coolant soon when your water pump craps out on you anyways. Good times.
