A few minor issues with '11 328xi
Hey guys,
I've had a few odd behaviours from my E90 over the last few months. It's a 2011 328i xDrive 6MT. I've booked it in for service, and it's under warranty, but I can't get in until the end of the month. A few times now, stopped at a red light, the engine has just shut off and a yellow CEL pops up. No noises or shuddering/shaking or drama, just quietly gives in. I hit the start button and it fires right up, and it's fine. Cold starts: This seems odd because it's only at moderate temps. At -20C it started like a champ every day. At 6C it's fine. When it's right around the zero mark, it's a very long start. I get the odd rough start at random temps as well, where revs surge a bit more than usual. Lastly, the fuel economy has been a little high. I'm assuming it's because I'm running snow tires on steelies, but in case it's related to the other stuff I figured I'd throw it out there. I used to average 12L/100KM and now it's closer to 14.5 It's got 52,000KM. Recently had all 6 coils replaced. |

Hopefully everything will be covered under the warranty.
Have you scanned for codes? Might give you some ideas. Kind of wondering if the engine just quitting at a stoplight is caused by a failing/failed Crankshaft Position Sensor (CKP). Perhaps fuel pump issues? Maybe a vacuum leak - but I would think you would notice more drive-ability issues. As for fuel economy, I am wondering if just the colder temps are causing the increase. Takes a bit longer for engine to get to OT. Running heat/AC, fan, seat heaters all add more to the electrical load possibly making the alternator work more - putting more load on the engine. In combination with the snow tires it could all add up - I would wait for spring to see if it improves. Winter fuel? not sure if you have different blends for the seasons up in BC. I always notice my fuel economy is not as good in the winter as it is in the spring/summer. The dying at a stoplight and hard starting at certain temps could be related - too hard to know without knowing the codes that are present. Either get the P codes or the BMW codes. |

i haven't scanned for codes yet - don't have a code reader. Over the last few days the hard starts have gotten worse, and today it started and immediately stalled out twice. Stomping the gas while it was turning over seemed to do the trick. Is this a clue?
When I got home I popped the hood and noticed the intake hose from the front of the car going into the airbox had popped loose... could it be that simple? |

Getting the fault codes will be the best next step. |

Otherwise, definitely scanning the codes is step #1. |

They said they can maybe squeeze me in if it's an emergency, they just don't have any available loaner cars until the 22nd so I'd be out of luck, and I really need a car every day. If it continues to get worse I'll have to dump it down there and borrow or rent a car.
And yeah, it was just the accordion section that had unclipped itself. Also, I grabbed a cheap scan tool on Amazon, I'm sure it'll come in handy! |

An update for anyone with similar issues in the future
Eccentric Shaft Sensor fault. Sensor had oil in it. Replaced sensor and V/C gasket. Seems to be working fine now. |
