Retrofitting MULF2 and IBOC to 06 E90

I purchased my daughter an 06 E90 325i. I have some leftover parts from my E70 CIC retro that I want to put in her car to get her BT phone, BT audio (via tune2air in the MULF2 USB) and HD radio. The MULF was USB only in the donor.

I have coded as much as I can figure out and here is where I am. BT shows up on the radio screen but pressing the button does nothing. USB is not an option for audio input. And HD radio is not active. IBOC module is not visible in NCS. Does anyone see anything obvious in the info below?

06 had TCU only I believe.
You have to change the build date to get the software for
the Mulf 2 to load is my understanding .
Then there is the question of changing the VIN number in the
Mulf. Supposedly done in Tool32.
If anybody has a totally successful procedure it would be interesting
to see it.

Exactly as ctuna says.

In NCSEXPERT you need to simulate a date change and the. You'll be able to code MULF2. 1st load an expertmode profile.

In the NCSEXPERT menu go to FA option and remove your MF date #0605 and replace with #0307

Do NOT run the job FA_WRITE.

Instead, go back, open the module list you'll now be able to code ULF2. Run the job SG_CODIEREN for RAD2, ULF2 and I think maybe KOMBI too.

From the other thread 2mulf is suppose to show up as the correct
version of the mulf.
What about the vin in the mulf is that important.

Yes, sorry, was a typo on my part. Was using the app on my phone.

I don't believe VIN change is necessary but it's always good to so. Simple with tool32.

Thanks for the suggestions but still no love. I think my rad2/mask software is too old. Now I need to learn how to update it. The odd thing is the i-level appears to be from 2013 but all software versions below are 2005?? (The 2007 IBOC and 2008 ISPB/ULF2 HI ones are from my 2009 E70 donor)

What does the UIF say? Go to the UIF screen in INPA to see current zusb number and dates.

What is really odd is the fact that ISTA+ is displaying an invalid chassis type (model) code...there is no such thing as a VB23. The chassis type code should be VB13 which is a US E90 325i:

Assuming that the i-level is correct, my guess is that your UIF will reflect the following ZB numbers:
Code:
JBBF    9134485
MRS     9134280
DME/DDE 7623407
I don't have time to guess the rest...

Your assumptions on the ZB numbers are correct. Mask does appears to be from 2006 so that probably needs to be updated to get MULF2 and IBOC to work as those were not available until 2007. Any advice on a safe software update for just MASK would be appreciated.

ISTA+ also gets my E70 build date wrong. It does display the correct i-level for my E70 so I am confident it is good.

With regards to RAD2, ZB number 6987900 is correct per the i-level.

You can generate a measures plan with ISTA/P to determine the latest recommended ZB number(s). However, in the case of RAD2, I don't believe that it will recommend a firmware upgrade as ZB number 6987900 is the latest for that hardware revision.

EDIT: Your RAD2 is P/N 65-12-6-971-703:

Thanks for the response. The reason I thought it was possible is you helped the guy in these threads update his pre 3/07 mask.

I edited my previous post to include the part number of your RAD2. You have an early hardware revision, hence, ZB 6987900 is the latest firmware available for your RAD2. If you want to flash a later firmware revision, then you would need to upgrade the RAD2 to a newer hardware revision.

From the best that I can ascertain, compatibility is roughly as follows:
ZB number 6975013 -> first applicable P/N 65-12-6-975-013
ZB number 9205946 -> first applicable P/N 65-12-6-975-013
ZB number 9205965 -> first applicable P/N ??-??-?-???-???
ZB number 6987900 -> first applicable P/N 65-12-6-971-703

See if ISTA/P recommends a newer ZB number for your module. However, I doubt it will.

Wow that is good stuff. Thanks. At this point it probably makes sense to get the newer LCI radio with built in BT/USB and sell my old radio, mulf, iboc. If coding is not an issue the new radio will cost less than the sale of my pile of parts. How new can I go? This one is from a 2014.

You're welcome. Sorry, I have no idea with regards to radio compatibility.

ZB number 9205946 -> first applicable P/N 65-12-6-975-013
ZB number 9205965 -> first applicable P/N ??-??-?-???-???
ZB number 6987900 -> first applicable P/N 65-12-6-971-703

I believe this will work. Based on the part numbers, the connectors look the same as well.

Other people have coded the mulf2 in an 06 but it requires some
tricky programming and the new radio with usb does as well . Some say you can't code the new radio without an icom cable . This seems
to vary with model year , anybody know what the years and details are?

If it does require icom or ops, it must have started with LCI. No issues coding prelci with ncs that I've seen through USB.

Even though this is a 2014 radio it still came from an E series E84. I was surprised to find E series still being made in 2014. Would E series anything need icom?

From the best that I can ascertain, compatibility is roughly as follows:
ZB number 6975013 -> first applicable P/N 65-12-6-975-013
ZB number 9205946 -> first applicable P/N 65-12-6-975-013

What about WinKFP to flash? Is that an option?

NCSexpert for
coding and option vo changing
windkfp for updating modules one at a time
istap updating modules all at the same time.
tool32 manipulating,resetting and reading values within modules.

That is the way I understand experts correct me if I am wrong.

There are part no's for radio's with usb hd and bluetooth in the two
threads I posted along with what people had to do to get them
installed which looks like mostly manipulations of NCSexpert.
(and maybe a hardware rewire for the microphone)
And again they had to change the production date on 06's to get
the correct software to load.

NCSexpert is what most have used to install options.

Why don't you send a pm to dstrickland he may be able to help
you .

Feel free to PM me with TeamViewer info, I'll see what I can do.

Beforehand, make sure the most loop is closed & all equipment is wired right.
