Coding: If I have Windows laptop with no ethernet...

...port, can I use a Thunderbolt- or HDMI-to-ethernet adapter easily?

Is it as simple as letting the adapter driver install, and then the newly created virtual ethernet port is ready to go?

Or, is this a whole change-a-ton-of-settings-first project?

I used this USB to ethernet adapter (http://a.co/eAKCMGT), and it worked without any type of extra setup.

Yes. It is that simple. With virtual machines, there is more configuration needed. But, with ultrabooks and other new thing notebooks without ethernet, they are plug and play.

One other note: make sure you have good adapter. I have seen cheap usb to ethernet cables that did not get adequate power; this resulted in intermittent connection as well as potentially more severe issues (see below).

For proper connection:
  • Make sure motor is running if car is not on a Charger.
  • Third party Security Suites (Antivirus / Firewall / etc) are disabled
  • LAN Adapter is set for DHCP and not using a Static IP.
  • The Target Connection Window should not be blank (It should show multiple target connections for different chassis')
Besides initial connection, you can corrupt ECU's if communication between vehicle and computer is disrupted under the following conditions:
  • Vehicle shutdown during coding because battery voltage is not maintain using either engine or external PSU
  • Lose or low quality cable / adapter.
  • Computer shuts down due to loss of battery.
