BMW M3 vs. Lotus Exige

many here say the e9x M3 is too heavy to be a track car. do you agree?

I was checking out specs on the two cars handling one heavy and one lite (from RT)....

----------- M3--------Exige
60-0-------112--------107
80-0-------197 --------188
Skid--------0.98-------0.96
slalom------71.4--------71.2
the "ring----8:05--------8:42

I think the M would eat a standard Elise/Exige on all but the tightest tracks. Things would become a little tighter against a 220/240.

yes - the "S" has 220 hp and handles better. like 0.97 skid pad and 73 mph slalom. but would it be enough to make up almost 40 seconds on the ring?

i think the exige might take an m3 on the track, but on a straight, the m3 would just easily devour it

Nurburgring the M3 would be faster no question, too many long straights.

maybe its close enough to depend on the track and the driver. as far as the Exige S, I thought it had 220 HP. those listed about have 260-263 PS which must be 250 HP?

Sorry the thread title says BMW M3 vs. Lotus Exige.

Thought you were talking about the Exige in general. My bad.

If you are talking about owning a dedicated track car. No question I would choose the much lighter Exige, curb weight 2077lbs. The car is just more raw. I would like a the new Exige S 240.

The 06 NA Exige may win on a very tight circuit, but in general I don't think it would stand a chance against the e92 M3. The Elise with suspension mods is lighter (and I think faster) yet it won't even beat the e46 M3 on most tracks.

The 240 S is a different story. It has the potential to keep pace on most tracks that didn't have long straights - that would be an entertaining match to witness.

And as a side note - the Lotus is not a good track car for anyone who can't afford to potentially spend 30K to fix it should a wall come up too close on the track and damage both clams and carbon fiber crash structure - which is quite common. It is a bloody expensive car to repair and IMO not worth the money for the performance. Most STi's and Evos on the track will take an Elise or NA Exige.

enigma could answer if I am right about this but on anything other than say 4 laps of a track the Exige will win with ease, the excessive weight of the M3 will make the tyres and brakes go off after this amount of laps, leaving the little Exige to dance rings around it.

Of course these comments of mine are based on both having stock equipment.

if it beats the 220 hp Exige S then it should beat the normal Exige.

footie - good point on extended laps and tires.

but I think its more than 4 laps. most of us dont due more than 20 minute sessions in street cars. also most of us will install track tires on the Lotus and the M3 if we are serious. and the nurburgring is like 14 miles, isnt that equal to about 7 laps?

Who are ya lookin' to beat on the track sayem?

I know a few fast drivers in Loti... don't know any fast track drivers in E46 M3's. Doesn't mean the M3 couldn't be faster, it's just generally not the tool of choice for serious track work, unless you want to strip it out and do all the race prep.

Just read about the new 220 hp S. I think its cool that BMW can build a car that can suit a family of four and yet keep up with a 2 seater like the Exige or the C6. Impressive I think.

I think the Lotus would make a great auto-x car, just not for me on a big track or DD, too small, feels too tight.

x2. plus if you want a daily driver that seats 4, to track on the weekends the M3 is perfect. not sure how the Lotus would be as a daily driver.

Lotus is fine as a daily driver - a large number of Lotus owners use their cars as a DD. Main issue is it's not so good in the wet - it can be downright scary with either set of stock tyres on the motorway.

I dont find the Lotus very comfortable myself. I cant imagine driving it 330 miles in a day.

The Lotus gets more attention than I like as far as city driving....

I agree that the M3 is a car that can do everything and hit the track on the weekends. But do you really WANT to take a technologically-complex, $70K car on the track? I see a lot of people who do that with similar (expensive, nice) cars and it's only a matter of time before they say "I need a more dedicated track car."
