My car was making this sound before. I replaced the idler pulley, tensioner, and belt 1,000 miles ago and it's been dead quiet since. However, today on my way home, it started up again. I can't imagine an idler pulley going bad that quickly and now I'm leaning toward something else.

Could be other things such as the alternator, power steering and/or AC pulleys.
