Plasti dip window trim question

Hello,
I would like to change my silver window trim to black on my montego blue 335i. I was wondering how many cans I would need? I was thinking 2 but have no idea. Never Plasti dipped anything before. Also, would it be ok to apply it when it's cold out? I would keep the cans warm but the trim would be cold. Any help would be greatly appreciated, thanks!

Do you plan on doing the trim at the base of the window, or just the trim above?

Ok, I did mine about a year ago and here is my $0.02 if you wanna do it right. First skip the plastidip and go to paint. I dipped mine first and it was a mess, removed it after 3 days. Take all the trim off, sand it down lightly, prime, paint, and clear coat it. The biggest PITA is getting the lower trim back on. I had my friend help me, because it wants to pop out of the little rubber grove until its full installed. Before putting the trim back scrape out the groove to remove all the dirt/debris. I then sprayed the ribber groove with pledge to allow the metal trim to slide back into place. Start from the back and have one person hold the front down in the grove, while the second person pushes it in from the back. The biggest thing is making sure it stays flat until fully installed, otherwise it will pop out. Once you get the first one installed the other 3 wont be too hard. Another thing which I didn't do but would recommend would be to remove the mirrors. I messed up the paint a little sliding it under the mirror because there is zero clearance. The last and most important thing is to buy these clips!!!

I bought about 15 of them because they either broke when removing the top trim, or were missing (no idea how), but they are cheap and will be needed. I hope this helps, if it's confusing let me know I can help clarify. Good Luck!

Oh wow, thanks so much for that info. I guess il paint it instead and do it the right way. I'm assuming the paint , primer and clear coat can just be bought in spray cans? Il make sure to buy those clips so I don't have to worry about breaking clips pulling the pieces out. Thanks again!!

You might have to find them for your car then, not sure about figment. Also if you want the trim to match the door plastic (not sure what the e92 has) you're gonna want to do a flat/matte finish.

*** Also make sure you paint the edge and part of the underside of the trim. I missed a few spots on the edges and had to take it off again. Also the top trim you can see behind it so just make sure you check what is visible before removing it so you can do it right the first time.

You could even just do a primer coat, and then a few coats of that without a clear coat. Now that I think of it that may be what I did...

I would hold off on doing it during winter time. Unless you have a heated garage you can use for a couple days.

no clear, just lightly sand and apply several light coats. sem is and oem match to all black trim on this car with a slightly satin finish. Really durable. I wouldnt waste my time with plasti dip, just not worth the effort and will peel off / scratch easily

+1

Especially when installing the lower window trim you REALLY have to use some force so make sure it really cured. Otherwise your gonna end up messing up the finish and having to re-spray it.
