can somebody weigh the 18" wheel/tires?
I see on the other thread the 19" wheel + tire weigh 47# (front) and 51.5# (rear)
we can estimate the wheel weight from the listed tire weight, but I don't think that's important as the tire weight is listed on a web site we don't know if that's 100% acurate. if someone could weigh the whole 18" wheel/tire front and rear we'd have the true number. I'm curious if the 19" are less than 27# each maybe the 18" are the heavy wheels for the M3. Only thing we can't control would be if the scales are not the same accurate. |

"Greg, today I checked with Michelin about the OEM spec'd tire weights for the '08 M3, and this is the weight information. MPN -12666 for 245/35/19 (front): 23.37 lbs MPN -27673 for 265/35/19 (rear): 25.36 lbs MPN -21820 for 245/40/18 (front): 23.57 lbs MPN -25785 for 265/40/18 (rear): 24.01 lbs That means that Tire Rack was very close with its weight numbers, and based on the pics that you posted, the front rims weigh 23.63lbs while the rear rims weigh 26.14lbs. BTW, can anyone confirm with data/source the validity of the following weights for the 18" 219 M Doppelspeiche wheels? Front: 23.19 lbs Rear: 24.93 lbs If the above weights for the 18s is accurate, that would mean that the front 18s are less than half a pound lighter than the 19s with the rear 18s weight being just over a pound less than that of the 19s. All in all, IMO, the 19s are a bargain in the weight department." Post #74: http://www.m3forum.net/m3forum/showt...=204946&page=8

If the 19" weigh 23/26 lbs than likely the 18" won't weigh as much (if any) less.
I wonder how the word got round where the 19" weighed 4-5 lbs more each? I was not getting the 19" wheels based on how people said they were so heavy, but it seems not the case. |

I don't know--I've been trying to determine and defuse that for months.

I'll try not to make a promise but I might be doing some work on my car in maybe a week or so that should allow me to weigh the wheels. I had the rear tire off a few weeks ago and I had this awesome scale at my house to use but didn't know it. Now I can't find that damn scale.

Alarm install. I was so close to weighing that wheel on a postal scale that wasn't so accurate so I tossed the idea. But then I walked into my dad's house, saw that his wife was packing boxes to bring on the plane and had some really nice looking cargo scale. This was after I put the tire back on. Now I can't find that scale again and she's out of the country. I think the best thing to do is weigh both the 19s and the 18s on the same scale to know for sure.

Gosh almighty, you know BMW knows the answer but they can't be bothered. Car company like Lotus will tell you the weight of the optional wheels. It's not hard to do but not many people care. BMWs weight of the car as a whole is very odd since not one car has been weighed as much as they list the M3 which they list over 3700 lbs. I believe the Elise wheels (small tho) are in the 14 to 16 lb range. It would be nice to know for sure what the 19" and 18" weigh. I can change my wheel order but unless I know what is the lower weight I don't see how to decide. |

The unsupported claim that the 19" wheels weight close to 29lbs has been around forever, and I am yet to see anyone verify that with any kind of data--credible or not. Your numbers are the only piece of valid-looking data I've seen so far. If my back wasn't all messed up, I would take my wheels off and weigh them at work just to confirm as we do have some accurate scales. I think the stock 19" wheels are good bargain. They also look great. If one is very serious about track performance, one can buy a set of sub 20lbs 18" wheels for that use. I wouldn't drive around Boston with that kind of a setup.

the 18's are cast not forged - so they likley wiegh more than the forged 19's.
if your scale is not accurate the wiehg yourself plus the wheel and then yourself alone. subtract and you have the woeght of the tire/wheel. BTW the Stock 18's on the e46 m3 were very heavy.

That's exactly right. I've had some very light cast wheels, it depends on a number of factors. It could be lighter, could be heavier. Can't say for sure until someone weighs these damn wheels. I'm more than willing if someone has a scale and wants to do this. The scale I had access to is now gone and I still haven't gotten my jack pads yet for the M3 so I'm hesitant to jack the car up again.

BWM cast wheels are known to be heavy casue they want them strong, witness the e46 M3 wheels were like 25/27 pounds in 18 inch.
