BMW 540i review - Petrol 'six plays second fiddle to the diesel

Evo prefers the six cyl diesel to the six cyl petrol in the new 5 series - Diesel is dead, long live diesel!!

And their only reasoning is:
Quote:
Despite its livelier top end the 540i feels no faster in the real world, uses more fuel and sounds less appealing.
So for those that dont care about the difference in fuel usage, like driving on fast twisty roads and will be fitting the M Performance exhaust the reasoning may be very different.

Petrol-engined Fives are predicted to account for just 5% of sales in the UK, and while that might make the enthusiasts amongst us sad
That is very sad. What do UK drivers have against petrol ? Dont they like driving ?

as I've mentioned elsewhere, the allure of diesel may fade in the coming years with the "war on diesel" seeming to grow all the time, only the other day, Doctors in London were asking for all diesels to be banned in London due to the effects on health.
The 540i is seriously on my next list.

The 5 series, in my opinion, must be taken diesel. The only petrol you have to pay for is the M5.

Onestly, I have an M140i, but I ensure you that if a 6 cylinders diesel 1 series had been available (maybe with the manual gearbox), that would be my choice for sure.

I had a 2011 535i and then a 2014 535d (I know, it's really a 530d) and I much preferred the diesel. The low end torque is amazing for driving around town making the car feel more powerful than it's petrol counterpart. Highway mileage was amazing. If I were buying another 5 it would be the diesel for sure.

The 540i becomes a real beast and drivers car once you put Power and Sound kit on it. Then you would get a proper enjoyable petrol engine sound and a car which is truly fun to drive.
