Possibly buying my first BMW
I've been looking into getting a new daily driver. My father recently got a 06 330Xi for his lot and I quickly fell in love with it upon driving it for the first time. He offered it to me for $6400 which seems to be a good price but they're is a few reasons why I haven't bought it yet.
I've only ever owned Subaru's and while I am mechanically inclined I know nothing about German cars especially when it comes to working on them. This vehicle I have noticed already has an issue that I believe is timing related (subtle jerking while under load). Should I wait for a 335i to come along? I noticed the price range for a 335 ranges from 13-20k and I would have to travel at least 5 hours to get one as BMW's are very rare where I live. Exterior is a solid 7/10 with a few scratches and the wheels aren't in the best of shape. Interior is a 9/10 and the only issue I can see is the paint is wore off on drivers door handle. My question now is should I buy this? It has 117,000 miles and seems to be a decent car and a good price. Please let me know what you guys think. |

I would suggest waiting to get a 335i. We also have a Subaru (STI) and I love both of them. But my 335i was worth the wait and the money. The 330xi will be nice and more reliable than having a 335i but you'll feel like youre missing something ;-). Get the 335i. You can find them with decent miles for a decent price.

It sounds like the car on your Dad's lot is an automatic xi, which is not BMW's best version of the E90. At 100,000 plus miles any E90 will need some maintenance and repairs, but they are easy 200,000 mile cars. If you wrench on cars, you are way ahead on ownership. BMWs are pretty easy to work on. There are tons of technical information on the web to use and E90 Post has a great DIY section.
Good luck with the choice.

A manual transmission can be set to "comfort", "sport", and "track" modes simply by the technique and speed at which you shift it; it doesn't need "modes", modes are for manumatics that try to behave like a real 3-pedal manual transmission. If you can money-shift it, it's a manual transmission. "Yeah, but NO ONE puts an automatic trans shift knob on a manual transmission."

Nice car. Seems like a good enough deal. Like said above it will need some maint, but if you're DIY'r you'll catch on fast.
If first bimmer and worried about maint I'd do some more research on the 335 before buying. Great machine, but more demanding. |

I'd love to have the 335i but then I'll get the mod bug with it and I'll end up having two money pits at least with the 330 I know I'm pretty limited with doing any modifications to it. I've been driving it a good bit today and I have it for the weekend. Performance wise it doesn't seem too bad its definitely slow off the line but on the highway it has no trouble keeping up. I currently have an old legacy as my daily and I would really like to get into something nicer.
I only drive the RSTi occasionally as its more just for spirited drives and the only creature comforts it really provides is power windows. It still even has original heavily warn seats in it. It is an automatic which I'm not a big fan of but I've only ever had manual cars and it is kind of nice driving an automatic occasionally. Do you guys think its worth the price though? I've noticed these tend to vary greatly in what they're sold for. |

I have zero experience with German cars so this is definitely a lot different for me. I'd love to have a 335 but do to the added price of it and the fact I'll probably have to drive a decent ways to get one I'm probably just going to stick with the 330.

Buy a good OBD scanner like the BMW specific Carly and you'll be ahead of the game. For ~$100 it can do a lot. |

Search the forum for whatever issues you have. If you can't find a satisfactory answer start a new thread. I was just pointing out that you were posting in someone else's thread from two years ago. Welcome to e90post, and I hope you enjoy your new ride!

I've been in Idaho recently. I'd rather be there than in the deep south. Utah is just it's own mormon thing, but I do know some non LDS people that live there and like it. |

I don’t think that your father is doing you any favors.
